COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's soccer team kicked off the new campaign on Wednesday night at Bernlohr Stadium with a close 1-0 loss to the Spartans of Case Western Reserve University.
After a tightly contested first period, the teams stood even at 0-0. They retook the field under the lights of Bernlohr and continued to fight back and forth for nine minutes until the Spartans netted a break-away goal in the 54th minute. The goal came from Christina Hickson and was assisted by Anika Washburn. Despite a strong resilience and several close chances from the Capital squad, the Spartans would hold their lead for the remaining 36 minutes.
The standouts for the Purple and White were
Lauren White and
Mia Gambaccini. White held off a barrage of shots from the Spartans, finishing the game with eight saves. Gambaccini led the team with two shots.
At the other end, Maggie Storti started in goal for Case Western and finished with two saves.
The Capital women retake the field this coming Sunday, September 5th, in Pittsburgh. They will take on the Tartans of Carnegie Mellon University with a 3:00 pm kickoff.
