BEXLEY, Ohio –  BOOM BABY, BOOM! The Capital University softball team powered their way to another doubleheader sweep over Wilmington College on Friday afternoon behind five home runs hit by four different players.Â
The powerful display of hitting was highlighted by a homer in each game from
Lexie Leggett, including a three-run shot in the night cap.Â
Lauren Kachure and
Jessica Camp joined Leggett in game one with solo home runs, and
Haley Grau tagged a two-run homer in game two to help matters.Â
Both
Brianna Shearer and
Katelyn Wilhelm pitched great on the day helping minimize the Wilmington offense.Â
The doubleheader sweep capped off a four-game series sweep of the Quakers (16-24) and was the teams third straight twinbill sweep to round out the regular season.Â
GAME ONE - Capital wins 5-0 (Box Score)
A combination of hitting bombs and a gem of pitching display pushed Capital (16-20) to their fifth straight victory in the game one shutout.Â
Despite only having four hits in the game, Capital made their contact count.
Lexie Leggett,
Jessica Camp, and
Lauren Kachure all hit solo home runs to build a 3-0 lead for the Crusaders by the end of the third inning.Â
In the fourth, Capital got their insurance.
Alysa Durbin led off with a single and was pinch ran for by
Maria Keller. Leggett was then hit by a pitch putting two on. Both runners advanced on
Haley Grau's sac bunt. Keller then scored on a wild pitch that pushed Leggett to third. Leggett came home on an RBI groundout from
Alyx Wulff to extend Capital's lead out to 5-0.Â
The five runs proved to be all the Purple and White would need to come away with the win as
Brianna Shearer pitched yet another gem in the circle. Picking up her 11th win of the season, Shearer tossed a complete game and allowed just three hits. She punched out a season-high 10 batters in her efforts.Â
GAME TWO - Capital wins 7-4 (Box Score)Â
Once again, the long ball and a great pitching performance proved the key to victory in game two.Â
Despite an early setback in the first inning, starter
Katelyn Wilhelm stayed in control for the duration of her start and secured her fourth win of the year.Â
Wilhelm got a huge offensive boost in the third inning aided in large part to a grand slam from
Lexie Leggett -- her second dinger of the day and seventh of the season. The inning got started by a single from
Jessica Camp.
Isabelle Hysong then entered as a pinch runner and moved to third on back-to-back sac bunts. In scoring position, Hysong was brought home on a RBi single from
Lauren Kachure. Kachure then stole second and moved to around the bases after
Tiffany Zuelzke walked and
Alyx Slusher singled, scoring Kachure. The rest is history as Leggett sent another ball over the fence with one swing of the bat, putting the Crusaders ahead 5-1.Â
Just an inning later in the bottom of the fourth, yet another ball sailed over the fence off a Capital bat. This time,
Haley Grau smacked a two-run shot that scored
Jessica Camp. The homer was Grau's second of the year.Â
Wilhelm got in a little trouble in the top of the sixth and conceded two more runs leading to the relief of
Brianna Shearer. Shearer worked out of the jam, limiting the damage in the sixth and then conceded a run of her own in the seventh, but did enough to close the door and earn her first career save. Overall, Wilhelm threw five innings and allowed four hits, three runs and four walks. Shearer threw two innings and allowed a run on two hits. Both pitchers struck out two batters each.Â
