WILMINGTON, Ohio –  On Friday afternoon, the Capital University baseball team was upended in both parts of a doubleheader at Wilmington College. The hosts took game one by a final of 8-7 and captured the night cap by a score of 9-4.

The losses set Capital back to a 4-28 mark. Wilmington improves to a 9-23 record with the sweep.

The Purple and White had a day at the plate, combining for 27 hits between the two games. Both Logan White and Brandon Barnette collected six hits on the day, while Brendan Stinson collected four hits in game one.

GAME ONE: Wilmington wins 8-7 (Box Score)
Wilmington grabbed an early 2-0 lead after two innings but the Crusaders worked back into the game, eventually building out a 7-3 lead by the seventh inning stretch.

In the third, Cap got on the board as Brendan Stinson drove in Logan White on RBI double to right center, making the score 2-1.

After the Quakers tacked on another to move ahead 3-1, Capital had a big sixth inning to capture the lead. Dakota DesteFano led off with a homer to right before some small ball added two more. Brandon Barnette singled and moved to second on a sac bunt by Ryan Henne. Cole Callaghan then reached on an infield single putting Barnette at third. Konnor Black then put on a sacrifice bunt that scored Barnette on the squeeze attempt. Kurt Maxwell then reached on an error that enabled Callaghan to score, giving Capital the 4-3 advantage.

The Crusaders kept the momentum going in the seventh once again benefiting from a solo jack. This time, Brendan Stinson went yard over the right field fence. DesteFano then doubled and scored on a RBI single from Ryan Henne. Henne then scored on a RBI double from Cole Callaghan.

The four-run lead evaporated for the Crusaders in the bottom of the seventh as Wilmington scored three unearned to close it to 7-6.

The Quakers completed the comeback in the bottom of the eighth as they got a 2-run single from Tyler Shaneyfel to push them back in front 8-7.

Scott Gutstein started on the bump for Capital and lasted 6.2 innings. There, he conceded seven hits, six runs (one earned) and one walk. In his efforts he fanned two Quakers.

Gavin Vanhorn was then strapped with the loss in relief as he conceded two runs on two hits.

Thomas Hueber got the win for the Quakers in relief. Starter GlenAllen Anderson lasted 6.1 innings and allowed 11 hits and five runs (four earned).

GAME TWO - Wilmington wins 9-4 (Box Score)
Capital jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Dakota DesteFano tagged an RBI groundout that scored Aiden Kinser before Brendan Stinson reached on an error that allowed Logan White to score from third.

The Quakers then dominated the middle part of the game as they scored seven runs from the second to fifth inning. The score after five favored Wilmington 7-2.

Brandon Barnette halted the Quaker scoring spree with a solo homer to left in the top of the sixth.

Unfortunately for the Purple and White, Wilmington tacked on insurance with a run in both the sixth and seventh frames.

Capital did get a consolation run in the top of the eighth on an RBI double from Tyler Knapp that scored Barnette. The run proved to be too-little-too-late as the game ended 9-4.

Bryant Caporale started for Capital and pitched two innings and allowed four runs while struggling for command. Caporale surrendered three walks, three hit batters, and one hit in his outing.

Jared Heidecker, Brennon Newell, Spencer Knight, Matt Miller, and Connor McCloy combined for the final seven innings in relief and allowed eight hits. Newell struck out two batters during his time on the mound.

Kaleb Stines pitched a complete game and allowed 10 hits, four runs (three earned) and struck out six Crusaders.
