TIFFIN, Ohio – Capital University Softball took a pair of losses on Saturday, April 3, at Frann's Field in Tiffin, dropping their overall record to 5-11. The Cap offense sputtered and was unable to challenge the Student Princes who won both games by eight runs, 8-0 and 10-2.

The Capital offense was held in check by Caitlyn Dems, who allowed just two hits to the Crusaders lineup while sitting down four via strikeout. With the offense sputtering, it allowed the Student Princes to jump out and early and score enough to end the game in five innings.

The combination of Katelynn Wilhelm and Lexi Anderson had similar line scores, each throwing two innings and allowing four runs and three hits. Although the defense played a clean game, four walks hurt the Crusaders. Three of the four Berg hitters to walk later scored.

Heidelberg plated one in the first and followed up with a three-run second powered by Leah Bouillon's two-RBI double and base running that allowed her to score on a passed ball. She was also a part of four-run third inning that put Heidelberg up 8-0. Riley Cruse plated the last berg run with a single to right and then held Capital without a run to end the game in five.

GAME 2  |  L, 10-2 (F/5)

While the Capital bats improved in game two, the Crusaders were unable muster the offense necessary to outduel Heidelberg in game two. Capital dropped the second contest of the afternoon, 10-2, leading to a Berg sweep.

Heidelberg freshman Emma Dean had two run-scoring hits in the first three innings to aid in building an early 3-0 lead. Alex Slusher chipped into that lead with an RBI single in the fourth, but that was erased by a Shelby Miller run-scoring sac fly in the bottom half of the fourth.

While Tiffany Zuelzke's RBI single in the top of the fifth kept Capital within reach of the Student Princes, Heidelberg had other plans and turned a modest 4-2 advantage into an early ending after scoring six runs in the bottom of fifth. With aid from a Capital error and five hits, Heidelberg wrapped up the game on a sac fly that scored the game-ending run from third.

Riley Cruse (W, 4-3) went all five innings in the circle for Heidelberg and allowed just two runs off of six hits. Her counterpart from Capital, Brianna Shearer (L, 4-4), earned the decision after allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits over 2.1 innings.

Capital (5-11) will prepare for Marietta College and open that four-game set at home on Saturday, April 10 at Clowson Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
