ALLIANCE, Ohio –  On Sunday afternoon, the Capital University softball team played host to the University of Mount Union and dropped a pair via scores of 1-0 and 7-5.Â
Although Capital (10-18) were hosts, the games were played in Alliance at Mount Union's field due to unplayable field conditions in Columbus.Â
In the two games
Alyx Slusher,
Haley Grau, and
Erica Ogden led the team with two hits each. Lexi Leggett and
Jessica Camp each had two RBIs in game two to help the offensive side.Â
GAME ONE - Mount Union wins 1-0 (
Box Score)
Both teams struggled at the dish across game one as there were a total of 10 hits between the sides.Â
Capital remained quiet for much of the game, but threatened in the bottom of the fourth inning. After back-to-back lineouts from
Haley Grau and
Alyx Slusher, the Crusaders got to work.
Lauren Kachure and
Alysa Durbin hit two straight singles to put runners on first and second. With the threat on, unfortunately, Cap could not get a run home.Â
The very next inning, Mount (26-6) broke the deadlock. The team led off with two singles that pushed Allie Goldy to third. There, a ground out from Payton Guspyt enabled Goldy to score for the lone run of the game.Â
Brianna Shearer started in the circle and was knocked with the loss, despite pitching a very nice game. Shearer (8-6) pitched a complete game and allowed six hits and just the lone run despite not walking a batter and striking out one.Â
GAME TWO - Mount Union wins 7-5 (
Box Score)
Unfortunately for the Crusaders, Mount got to game two starter
Kim Rega (0-3) early and often by scoring five first inning runs.Â
Capital got a pair back in the bottom of the second to begin to work back into the game. All with two outs, the Crusaders loaded the bases.
Alysa Durbin was hit by a pitch and
Alyx Slusher and
Krislyn Bayles both singled. There,
Jessica Camp singled down the right field line enabling Durbin and Slusher to score.Â
Cap kept the momentum going in the third with another pair of runs. With
Erica Ogden and
Haley Grau on base, Lexi Leggett doubled to right center, scoring pinch runner
Grace Lockard.
Lauren Kachure then grounded out, scoring Leggett, pushing the score to 5-4.Â
In the close game, Mount needed some insurance. They got just that in the top of the sixth with two runs.Â
Capital aimed to come back from their 7-4 deficit in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI fielder's choice from Lexi Leggett. Unfortunately, the potential late-inning comeback faded away with back-to-back lineouts from Kachure and Durbin.Â
Shearer relieved starter
Kim Rega and pitched a large chunk of the game and conceded six hits, three runs (one earned), and two walks. She did strike out three batter in her relief efforts.Â
UP NEXT -Â
The Crusaders will face off with Baldwin Wallace next weekend in a four-game series. On Saturday, May 1st, Capital will travel to Berea for a 1 p.m. doubleheader start. The Yellow Jackets will then make the trek to Columbus on Sunday for a senior day doubleheader at 1 p.m.Â
