COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital University Softball improved to 5-9 overall after splitting Friday action with Heidelberg University at Clowson Field. The Crusaders earned a five-inning win to open the day but dropped a 9-3 decision to end the outing.

Capital broke out in game one with back-to-back three-run inning to begin the game, and added a third three frames later. Lexi Leggett highlighted the opening inning with a two-run base knock and then induced a rundown that allowed Kayedon Martin to score to make for a 3-0 lead. Alex Slusher led the second inning off with a base hit and later came around to score on Lauren Kachure's run-scoring single. An error later in the inning allowed two more Capital runs to score and the Crusaders to take a 6-0 lead.

Up 7-2, Capital scored three more times in the bottom of the fifth to end the game prematurely. Leggett, Slusher and Alyssa Durbin all recorded RBI hits with Durbin's sacrifice fly ending the game as Martin crossed the plate.

In the circle, Brianna Shearer (W, 3-3) earned her third win of the season behind a five-inning complete game in which she allowed six hits and struck out four Berg hitters.

Haley Grau and Erica Ogden finished 2-for-3 at the plate and each scored twice. Leggett recorded three RBIs and went 1-for-2.

Heidelberg scored the game's first run in their first at-bat but Lauren Kachure tied the game with a blast over the left-center field fence, 1-1. Capital then plated runs in each of the next two innings behind an Alyx Slusher RBI single and a grounder than allow another run to score in the fifth.

Capital lost that lead when Heidelberg plated three to make for a 4-3 contest in the. Krislyn Bayles had been cruising in the second and third frames but ran into trouble during her second pass through the lineup. After allowing an RBI double to tie the game, she was lifted for Kim Rega with one out in the fourth. Heidelberg took the lead before exiting the inning and then added another in the sixth to go up 5-3. Cap then surrendered four unearned runs after an errant throw allowed the inning to continue. Regardless, CU was unable to get any additional offense going with Riley Cruse (W, 3-3) in the circle finishing off a complete-game victory.

Tiffany Zuelzke and Lauren Kachure ended with two-hit performances at the top of the lineup.

Capital and Heidelberg will get back into action against one another on Saturday during a twin bill set for 1 p.m. from Tiffin.
