BEXLEY, Ohio – The Capital University men's lacrosse team hosted Ohio Northern University on Friday evening for what proved to be 60, thrilling, minutes of lacrosse. In the end, ONU utilized a strong first quarter that featured four goals to get ahead of the Crusaders by a final score of 7-6.

With the result, both teams move to 5-4 on the year.

In the early proceedings, it looked to be all Ohio Northern, as the visitors seemed to have their offense working in rhythm. With ONU ahead by three, Capital scored a quick goal with 8 minutes remaining in the quarter to get on the board. The goal came courtesy of an exciting 12 second sequence -- Lake Harris won the faceoff, Dylan Comella got the ground ball, Harris passed to Evan Frund, and Frund scored. The goal was Frund's first of two he would have on the night.

Northern then pushed their lead to 5-1 in the second quarter. Frund took a feed from Jack Scharner to lash home his second of the game, lifting the score to 5-2. Both teams followed up Frund's goals by trading scores, leading the halftime board to read 6-3. Brenden Pelton scored the Crusaders' other second period goal.

The second half favored the Crusaders, but costly penalties aided the clock in running away from any last chances.

Pushing for a comeback, CJ Hughes looked to have gotten Cap back into with an early third quarter goal. Unfortunately, the Polar Bears responded with what would be the game-winner with six minutes left in the third quarter. Ben Gawronski slotted home in an empty net off a feed from Mason Schmeling.

Pelton would go on to score his second of the game with another third period goal, setting up an exciting fourth quarter.

That exciting fourth quarter lived up to the hype and Jack Scharner got things going with Cap's sixth goal of the game. Scharner crossed up his defender and made a lane for a shot, beating Cole Zaferakis in the ONU cage.

Unfortunately for Capital, the Scharner tally would be as close as they came to finding the tying goal.

In the end, the penalty game played a large role in the game as ONU scored two man-up goals in the first half, while the Crusaders could not convert on their lone man-up opportunity. Capital also had two unfortunate penalties late in the game, limiting their possessions and chances to find another goal.

Ben Houser started in the Crusader cage and had nine saves. Three players tallied assists -- Doc Crimmel, Scharner, and Lake Harris. Frund caused two turnovers and a quartet of Crusaders picked up two ground balls each -- Houser, Crimmel, Hunter Knipp, and Drew Bolen

Nick Gosnell led the scoring for ONU with two goals. Cole Zaferakis had five ground balls and nine saves for the Polar Bears.

Capital returns to action on Wednesday, April 21 as Heidelberg travels to Columbus for a 7 p.m. game. The Crusaders beat the Student Princes 17-5 earlier in the season in Tiffin.
