ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Capital University men's lacrosse team took in a road loss with its 15-10 loss in Alliance at the hands of the University of Mount Union. The Purple Raiders used a big third quarter to separate and defeat the Crusaders, 15-10, at Mount Union Stadium.
Sophomore
Evan Frund helped Capital run out to a 3-1 lead in the first quarter by scoring two of his three goals in the opening two minutes, one on the man-up. Senior
CJ Hughes scored his 11
th goal of the season on a helper from Frund to put Cap up two goals just 2:24 into the game.
Mount Union came back to tie the game but Cap's
Aiden Manning helped retake the lead, 4-3, with his first career goal before the close of the first quarter.
The Purple Raiders scored three unanswered goals to open the second quarter, but the combo of
Jake Belt and
Dylan Comella helped keep it a one-goal contest heading into the half.
The third quarter proved to be a difference-maker. Mount Union outscored Capital 6-1 to take a lead it would not relinquish. Alex Kungle scored three times during that run to help build a 12-7 advantage going into the final frame. While Capital scored three times, including Frund's third to complete a hat trick, Mount Union matched that output to preserve the win on its home turf.
Capital held the advantage in the shot count, 54-52, including a 22-6 advantage in the fourth quarter. The Crusaders also aided in Mount Union's 19 turnovers, compared to the Crusaders' nine.
Frund led the Crusaders with a four-point game behind three goals and one assist.
Jack Scharner had a three-point evening, all by way of assists. Hughes also had a three-point game, scoring two goals and one assist.
Mount Union goalie Kyle Reihner earned his keep between the pipes after making 30 saves, including 10 in the fourth quarter alone. On the other side,
Ben Houser made 17 saves in a losing effort.
Capital (5-3, 2-3 OAC) will now prepare for this Saturday's contest against Ohio Northern University at Bernlohr Stadium. Start time is set for 1 p.m. and will be kick off a Cap Lax doubleheader with the women's team following at 5 p.m.
