BEXLEY, Ohio –  With the rain starting and stopping all afternoon, the Capital University women's soccer team was defeated for just the second time all season by a 1-0 score. This time, visitors, Otterbein University, were the opponents and kept their undefeated record intact with the win.

Prior to kickoff, Capital University Athletics and head coach Matt Ogden recognized five seniors -- Kelly Bachmann, Bridget Mallin, Emily Mathias, Jayde Hoffmann, and Sydney Dion -- for their contributions to the program over the past four seasons.

In a hotly contested first half, the Crusaders (6-2) had an early chance in just the second minute. Gabbi Viggiano controlled a deflection and shot a left footed effort toward the goal that clanked the crossbar.
Later in the half, Capital thought they had gone ahead in the 37th minute as Lexi Snider slotted the ball past the Cardinal (8-0-1) goaltender, Erin Gordon. Unfortunately for Snider though, the assistant referee's flag went up ruling the goal out for an offside infraction keeping the game level at zeros.

Otterbein used the lucky break as a boost and took the lead just six minutes later. Bella Shivley controlled a throw-in and turned her defender before curling home a shot just out of Bachmann's reach.

The second half saw the visitors remain in control of the match, fending off the Crusaders' best attack to level the score. Both Avery Hart and Bridget Mallin took two shots each in the second half, forcing Gordon into two saves, but that would be the closest Cap would come to finding their goal.

The Cardinals kept up their pressure and forced Kelly Bachmann to work in the second stanza, as she made four of her five stops in the last 45. Gordon finished the game with two stops for Otterbein.

The result enabled Otterbein a share of the OAC Tournament top spot as they finished with a level 8-0-1 record with Ohio Northern. Final seedings for the tournament will be decided shortly. Stay tuned for updates regarding the bracket and Capital's next match.
