MARIETTA, Ohio – The Capital University softball team took one of two games in its doubleheader at Marietta College on Sunday afternoon.
Brianna Shearer put together a solid effort in game one to lead Cap to a game one win, but the Pios came back and with one big inning took game two in six innings.

Capital began the game with a three-run first inning that started with a leadoff base hit by
Tiffany Zuelzke. She later came around to score on the first of Lexi Leggett's three hits,
Kayedon Martin later increased that early lead to 3-0 when
Kayedon Martin's two-run single.
Marietta came back to score one in the bottom of the first but then took the lead with a three-run second inning, powered by two sacrifice flies and a base hit.
With the score 4-3 in favor of the hosts, Zuelzke led the top of the fifth off with a walk and then came around to score on
Lauren Kachure's double to right center. Zuelzke scored via a throwing error by the Marietta centerfielder, beginning a four-run fifth inning.
Krislyn Bayles then made the impact play by blasting a home run over the left-center field fence to bolster Cap's lead, 7-4.
Meanwhile,
Brianna Shearer (W, 5-5) rolled in her third and fourth passes through the Pioneer lineup. One runner reached base in the third inning, and then not one more after that. Sheared mowed down the Pios, in order, in innings four through seven. Along the way, Shearer struck out two Pioneers and retired 13 consecutive batters to end the game.
Leggett led Cap with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. With two swings of the bat, Bayles and Martin accounted for five of Cap's six runs batted in. Â

Marietta had a nine-run outburst over the opening two innings, including a seven-run second inning.
Krislyn Bayles (L, 1-3) went 1.1 innings before giving way to
Katelyn Wilhelm in the circle. While Wilhelm struck out seven Pioneers in her 3.2 of work, including two innings in which she struck out the side, she also surrendered three runs on four hits.
Cap scored three runs in the third, paced by
Erica Ogden's sac fly and Leggett's fourth hit of the day, an RBI single that scored
Lauren Kachure. The Crusaders added another run in the fourth, but that is all the offense it could muster before Marietta ended the game in the sixth with its last run against reliever
Madrienne Herdlick.

Sunday's split now pushes Capital's record to 7-13 overall this season with four doubleheaders left to play. Its next outing will be on Saturday, April 17 in Westerville, Ohio against crosstown rival Otterbein University. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
