WESTERVILLE, Ohio –  On Saturday afternoon, the Capital University softball team was swept on the road by Otterbein University. The Crusaders dropped the games by scores of 5-1 and 10-2.Â
With the results, Capital moves to 7-15 overall, while Otterbein improves to 11-15 on the year.Â
Lexi Leggett made both of her hits on the day count as she drove in a run with both. In game one, Leggett had an RBI single, and in game two, she hit a home run.Â
GAME ONE - Otterbein wins 5-1 (Box Score)
The Crusaders got on the board in the top of the first inning with some smart play from
Tiffany Zuelzke. The sophomore drew a walk in the leadoff spot and then stole second. There, with two outs, Lexi Leggett smacked a single to right center -- enough for Zeulzke to score from second.Â
Capital would hold the Cardinals in the first. Starting pitcher,
Brianna Shearer allowed a lead-off single, but then induced a groundout and stuck out two to get out unscathed.Â
The hosts did however grab the lead in the bottom half of the second. A double and two singles led to two runs for Otterbein.Â
Shearer settled down for the third inning and did not concede any further damage. Unfortunately though, the Cardinals added three insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth to seal the deal in game one.Â
Capital was able to scatter a total of four hits and two walks, but could not add anything onto their run in the first inning.Â
Shearer (5-6) was strapped with the loss as she tossed six innings, giving up eight hits and five runs (two earned). She did however fan seven Otterbein hitters and did not allow a walk.Â
Brook Crosby (6-4) started in the circle for Otterbein and allowed just four hits, two walks and the lone run on the day. Crosby did strike out nine in her seven innings of work.Â
GAME TWO - Otterbein wins 10-2 (Box Score)
In the back-half of the doubleheader, Otterbein scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the run-rule in affect, as they knocked off Capital 10-2.Â
In the top of the second, with Cap trailing by two, Lexi Leggett continued her solid day at the plate with a solo home run.Â
The Cardinals added runs in the second and fourth innings to continue to pull away. However, in the fifth, Capital struck back for a run. With bases loaded,
Tiffany Zuelzke reached on an error allowing
Erica Ogden to come home. Ogden singled to short to lead off, then
Haley Grau reached on a fielder's choice, before
Allie Saulnier walked to set up the bases loaded situation.
Kim Rega started for the Crusaders and was hit with eight hits, six runs (five earned) and two walks in just four innings of work. Rega did strike out two Cardinals in her efforts.
Krislyn Bayles relieved Rega for 1.2 innings and allowed six hits, three runs, and two walks while striking out one.Â
