COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital University Men's Lacrosse improved to 2-0 overall following its 14-2 win over Marietta College in front of fans that lined the alleyway outside of the stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders featured two scorers to notch a hat trick and played stout defense, leading to a big-time win at Bernlohr Stadium.
SLOW BUT STEADY
- While the Crusaders needed just 52 seconds to score its first goal, they served as a model of consistency by scoring three goals in each of the first three quarters of play.
- Sophomore Jonathan Kilgallon (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) notched Saturday's first score, feeding off of a pass from Nathan Montgomery. It was the first of three for Kilgallon.
- Senior CJ Hughes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) followed up less than two minutes later with an unassisted goal to double-up the Capital lead. Montgomery then joined the part after the clock dipped just below 9:00 remaining in the first quarter.
- Kilgallon and Hughes both found the back of the net once again in the second quarter, and freshman Mason Spaulding (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) joined the party with the game's lone man-up goal scored to create a 5-1 Capital lead.
DEFENSE
- Capital kept Marietta scoreless through the first quarter, though they were not without chances. After being limited to three shots in the first quarter, the Pioneers tripled that count in the next frame. Six of those shots landed on goal, where graduate student Ben Houser (Hilliard, Ohio/St. Charles/Illinois Wesleyan) stood in its path.
- Marietta did not score until the clock read 13:48 in the second quarter when Zach Radcliffe marked up the scoreboard. The Pioneers' next and final goal did not come until 11:54 remained in the third quarter. From that point on, the Crusaders' defense turned down any opportunity to Pioneers attempted to create.
- Houser (2-0) earned the win after making 10 saves on 12 shots that landed on goal. He also scooped up two ground balls.
- Capital caused 17 Marietta turnovers and held the Pios without a special teams goal despite five different man-up opportunities.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Senior Hunter Knipp (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) had a top defensive effort with four ground balls and four caused turnovers for CU.
- CJ Hughes finished the day with five points behind three goals and two assists. He also recorded three ground balls.
- Killgallon ended the day with a hat trick, as well, leaving with three more goals to his season line. Spaulding and
- Spaulding, Montgomery and junior Jack Scharner (Maineville, Ohio/King's) all finished the game with two goals, each.
UP NEXT
Capital (2-0) will now prepare for its next opponent, John Carroll University, which it will host on Saturday, March 13. The Crusaders and Blue Streaks will meet at Bernlohr Stadium at 1 p.m. for its first game with fans in the stands in 2021.
