NEW CONCORD, Ohio – Capital University Baseball earned win number two of the season in a single midweek contest against Muskingum University at Mose Moorehead Field on Tuesday, March 30.
Jared Heidecker put forth his best start of the season to guide the Crusaders to victory, 8-4.
Senior left-handed pitcher
Jared Heidecker cruised throughhis first four innings of work, retiring the side in order to open the game then allowed one baserunner in each of the next three innings. He extinguished a minor threat in the second by striking out seven hitter Nate Keiser to end the inning and then mimicked that in the fourth to keep the Fighting Muskies scoreless through four.
Working behind a 3-0 lead, Heidecker allowed two runs in the fifth via a two-run single by Chayce Lundell, but never lost the lead. Capital's offense responded to that inning with two runs of its own when
Cole Callaghan roped a two-run single, making Muskingum pay for back-to-back walks to begin the sixth inning.
Heidecker (W, 1-2) went a total of 5.2 innings before turning the ball over to the bullpen.
Brennon Newell finished out the sixth inning and then Gavin Van Horn rolled the rest of the way. Van Horn went 2.2 innings after Newell got into trouble, but surrendered just one hit and struck out four in the long relief outing.
Callaghan was not finished at the plate. He scored earlier in the game after being hit in his opening at-bat and then driven home by Garrot Kennedy's triple. In his final at-bat with the score 5-4 to Cap's advantage, Callaghan hit a second run-scoring single, scoring one of the three runs Capital plated as insurance in the eighth.
Konnor Black added to the inning with a pinch hit, two-run double to give Van Horn the cushion to close the door on the win.
Callaghan finished the afternoon 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored and three RBIs. Kennedy went 2-for-5 with two runs batted in.
Cap (2-9) will now prepare for a Friday/Saturday set against Heidelberg University. The Crusaders and Student Princes will meet in Tiffin on Friday for a 1 p.m. start to game one, and then play the remaining two games of the series at Clowson Field on Saturday.
