NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Capital University softball team completed its weekend series with Muskingum on Sunday with a pair of losses to the Fighting Muskies. The Crusaders fell by scores of 8-2 and 14-1 (5 innings) at Newberry Field in New Concord, dropping their overall record to 4-8.

GAME 1 | L, 8-2
box score
Capital challenged Muskingum over the first three innings of Sunday's first game responding to each of the Muskies' first two scores with solo home runs. In the bottom of the second, Haley Grau tied the game with a solo shot and then Lauren Kachure did the same to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third.
From there, the Muskies took control with two runs in the top of the fifth and three in the following frame. From the fourth inning on, Capital mustered just two base runners, both via walks, and stranded both.

Hannah Smith (W, 5-2) went six innings, surrendering six hits and striking out five. Capital starter Brianna Shearer (L, 3-3) threw 4.2 innings and gave up four runs, three earned, in the loss. Kim Rega and Katelyn Wilhelm also made appearances in the circle to close out the game.

GAME 2 | L, 14-1 (F/5)
box score
Capital's Madrienne Herdlick surrendered one run in the top of the first but her offense was quick to return fire to tie the game early. After Tiffany Zuelzke got on base by way of a Muskingum error, a second miscue allowed Erica Ogden on base and put runners on the corners. Erica Ogden then stole second and on the throw, Zuelzke flew in to score and tie the game.
Muskingum them took control and put up crooked numbers in each of the next four innings, starting with a two-run second. The Muskies then scored three more in the third, twice more in the fourth, and then put the game far out of reach with a six-run fifth inning to make for a 14-1 game.

Capital (4-8) will now prepare for a four-game set with Heidelberg University beginning Friday, April 2 at Clowson Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. Games three and four of the set will be played on Saturday, April 3, in Heidelberg.
