COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team dropped both games of a Saturday doubleheader against Muskingum University at Clowson Field. The losses drop CU to 1-9 on the season. The Crusaders will play next Tuesday in New Concord for an amended return trip to complete the series against the Muskies.

GAME 1 |  L, 4-3

In game one of Saturday's twinbill the Crusaders struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning but the lead would not hold. Following back-to-back singles by Garrot Kennedy and Chase Clouser, CJ Rockwell drove one runner home when grounding out to short. Two walks loaded the bases and a wild pitch allowed a second run to score to help CU build the early lead.

Four scoreless frames went by before another run would score. Muskingum plated two in both the sixth and seventh innings to take back the lead. After Tucker Craft cruised through five behind just 50 pitches thrown, the sophomore hit a snag when beginning his third pass through the lineup. Trey Yoder led the inning off with the first of three consecutive singles, the last by Brett Carson scoring the Muskies' first run. A sacrifice fly later tied the game at two.

Run-scoring base knocks by Trey Yoder and Brett Carson against Craft in the top of the seventh put Muskingum up 4-2 with two trips to the plate left for Capital. The Crusaders got one run back when the Muskies were unable to turn an inning-ending double play allowing Brendan Stinson to score from third, but the Purple and White stranded two runners and then another in the ninth. Brett Carson, who came in to pinch hit in the seventh, stayed in to pitch and threw 3.0 effective innings to close the door on Cap and give Muskingum the 4-3 win.

Craft (L, 0-2) threw seven strong innings and struck out seven Muskingum hitters in the loss. He allowed four runs, two earned, on 10 hits and did not walk a hitter. It was his second straight quality start after allowing two over seven innings last weekend against John Carroll University.

GAME 2  |  L, 25-6 (F/7)
box score

Game two had a promising start where the Crusaders opened with a four-run inning in its first at-bat. Logan White and Ethan Neal each had run-scoring hits in the opening frame and the Crusaders held the advantage until the top of the fourth inning.

Up 5-1, Muskingum came out swinging with a seven-run fourth inning in which the Fighting Muskies tallied eight hits and benefitted from a Capital error to take an 8-5 lead. Muskingum did not stop there, but instead added four more runs in the fifth, one in the sixth, and then 12 runs in the seventh. Capital was only able to respond with one run in the third and fourth innings, leading to a 25-6 final in seven innings.

Holden Martin (W, 1-1) went five innings in the win and struck out seven in the Muskies' win.

Senior Scott Gutstein (L, 0-3) went 4.0 innings and gave up eight runs, five earned, on eight hits and one walk.

UP NEXT
Capital and Muskingum have agreed to postpone Sunday's action until Tuesday, March 30. They will meet in New Concord and play one nine-inning game at Mose Morehead Field. First pitch will be thrown at 4 p.m.
