While John Carroll struck first with a run in the top of the first, the lead was short-lived when Cap came back with a pair in the home half of the first. Cole Callaghan and Garrot Kennedy led the inning off with back-to-back singles, followed by a walk to Chase Clouser. Brandon Barnette drove home the first run with a sacrifice fly to right field, while Kennedy scored Cap's second run on a wild pitch by JCU starter Matthew Aukerman.

Callaghan plated another Capital run in the fourth with another sac fly, scoring Brendan Stinson, who led the inning off with a double to left field. In the fourth, Clouser led the inning off with a single and later came around to score after stealing second, advancing on a dropped third strike, and then completed the round trip on Logan White's groundout to short.

John Carroll scored one run in both the fifth and the sixth innings to draw closer, 5-4, but a five-run seventh inning helped Cap break away and set up the win. The Crusaders batted around the order and received run-scoring hits from Callaghan and White, while JCU reliever John Gavric walked home a run, as well. Ryan Henne rounded the bags by singled and advancing on three separate wild pitches to plate another run in the eighth, one of two runs CU scored that inning.

Three Crusaders finished with multiple hits, including Callaghan (2-3, 2 R, 2 RBI), Kennedy (2-5, 2 R, 1 RBI) and Connor Feeney (2-4, 1 R). Joshua Tyler scored three times despite going 0-for-2 with two walks.

Dalton Anker (W, 1-0) earned his first win after throw 5.2 solid innings for Cap. He surrendered four runs, three earned, and nine hits. Bryant Caporale entered and threw a spirited 3.1 innings to earn a long save. He allowed just one run on three hits while striking out one.

GAME 2 | L, 12-2 (F/8)
box score

John Carroll responded in game two with a 12-2 victory in an eight-inning affair. The Blue Streaks scored three runs before CU starter Brennan Newell was lifted for Connor McCloy, who made his collegiate debut. In 2.2 innings of work, McCloy gave up just one run one five hits while striking out three.

After taking a 4-0 lead into the fourth, John Carroll plated seven runs over the next two innings to break the game open. Capital committed two errors and walked four batters in that time. All four that walked later scored.
Logan White blasted the first home run of his career over the left field fence in the fifth, and a leadoff walk in the seventh allowed Capital to extend the game when Ethan Neal later hit White in on a sac fly, but that was all the offense Cap could muster in game two.

JCU's John Merrill (W, 2-0) tossed six innings and help Capital to three hits and one run while striking out eight. Cap was held to just five hits, total. John Carroll pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts.
