COLUMBUS, Ohio –  Capital University Softball saw its ups and down on Saturday afternoon while playing two with the John Carroll Blue Streaks. After losing by 15 runs in game one, Capital sported a short memory and came back to shut out the Blue Streaks, 3-0, in game two of its doubleheader at Clowson Field.
GAME 1 Â | Â L, 17-2 (F/5)
box score
An eight-run first inning for John Carroll set the tone for the rest of the game as the Blue Streaks' offense was in full effect in its 17-2 victory. After batting around the order, Gracie Bressoud cleared the bases with a two-out grand slam. Capital lifted started
Kim Rega (L, 0-1) where
Lexi Anderson ended the inning after getting out of a bases-loaded jam.
The Blue Streaks tagged on five more runs in the next inning to take a commanding 13-0 lead. Capital plated its first runs in the third behind run-scoring singles by
Haley Grau and
Lauren Kachure, but that was all the run production Capital would be able to muster in the five-inning affiair.
Bressoud finished 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBIs, while teammate Emma Gurley also finished with three hits. Capital collected just five hits, two coming from Kachure. JCU's Katie DeBord (W, 2-2) earned the win after pitching just 2.0 innings in the shortened game.
GAME 2 Â | Â W, 3-0
box score
After a short break, Capital returned to the field and back to work. Sophomore
Brianna Shearer (W, 3-0) took to the circle for Cap and had a day, allowing just three hits and no runs in a complete-game shutout. She struck out six Blue Streaks along the way and did not allow a runner past second base through the entire game.
Meanwhile, Capital's offense posted one run in each of its first two innings. Leadoff hitter
Alyx Slusher started the game off with a single and then advanced to second on a passed ball.
Lauren Kachure then drove her home with a solid single to left field off of DeBord, who took to the circle for a single consecutive start.
Sophomore
Tiffany Zuelzke got on base to kick start the second inning by dropping down a bunt and reaching base. The throw was offline as she crossed the bag, allowing her to advance to second. Two batters later, freshman
Kayedon Martin drove her home with a single to center field.
Cap's final run came in the fifth when a John Carroll error in the outfield allowed Kachure to reach base, where she later scored on a
Haley Grau single that reached the fence in right center.
UP NEXT
With the split, Capital is now 4-2 overall heading into Sunday's doubleheader with John Carroll (2-6) in University Heights. First pitch on Sunday will be at 1 p.m.
