Crusaders Drop Two to John Carroll on the Road

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team (0-6) hit the road to University Heights for an afternoon doubleheader versus John Carroll and fell 13-0 and 3-2 in each game.

GAME 1 // L, 13-0
  • Scott Gutstein started game one of the day and was immediately jumped on by the Blue Streaks offense with two runs crossing the plate in the first inning.
  • Gutstein was able to right the ship and held John Carroll scoreless for the next three innings.
  • In the fifth and sixth, the opponents scored six and five runs respectively to put the game out of reach and post a final of 13-0.

GAME 2 // L, 3-2
  • In the second leg of the doubleheader, Tucker Craft got the nod to take the mound and he pitched brilliantly.
  • Craft cruised through the first inning and left two runners stranded in the second to hang two zeroes on the board.
  • John Carroll did manage to push a run across in the third but were kept quiet for the rest of Craft's outing as he pitched seven innings, scattering six hits and striking out three.
  • In the top of the sixth, Capital loaded the bases with a Chase Clouser double and two walks to CJ Rockwell and Connor Feeney. Ryan Henne hung in and took a pitch to the back to tie up the ballgame at 1-1.
  • In the ninth inning, Brandon Barnette, Kyle Karchefsky and Connor Feeney strung together three singles to load the bases. Garrott Kennedy came up with the big hit of the afternoon, legging out a single to shortstop with two outs to drive in a run and give the Crusaders a one run lead.
  • Jared Heidecker came on in the bottom of the eighth and sat down the side but in the ninth the Blue Streaks were able to capitalize on walks and drop down a few hits to score two runs and take the game in the final frame.

THE SCOREBOOK
  • Craft tossed seven innings of one run baseball to bring his season earned run average down to 1.29.
  • Henne collected three hits for the afternoon and one RBI to top the squad.
  • The offense scattered seven hits in the second game, with six players chipping in, led by Kennedy with two knocks.

  • Capital comes home to Clowson Field for another two games versus John Carroll at 1p.m. on Sunday.
