COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital softball dropped the morning game, 11-3 at Ohio Northern to begin the day but finished strong with a 6-5 victory to close out the weekend and take their third win of the series.

GAME 1 | L, 3-11
  • The Polar bears offense jumped on the Capital starter Krislyn Bayles and chased her after just 1.2 innings and eight runs on the board.
  • That eight run deficit was difficult to overcome but the Crusaders managed to push a run across in the third on an Alyx Slusher single to begin cutting into the lead.
  • In the top of the fifth, senior Alysa Durbin drove in two more on a single to right to get within five of Ohio Northern.
  • However, later in the inning the Polar Bears matched them with two more runs and after scoring one more in the sixth, took the contest 11-3.

GAME 2 | W, 6-5
  • Sophomore Brianna Shearer drew the start for game two and pitched a great game to help Capital to victory.
  • The Crusaders gave their starter some breathing room in the first inning, as junior Lauren Kachure reached on an error that scored Slusher.
  • Shearer held the Polar Bears to just one hit in the first two innings before allowing a run to cross the plate in the third to tie things up 1-1.
  • In the fourth inning, Capital strung together an error, single and a walk to load the bases with two outs. Sophomore Tiffany Zuelzke walked to bring in a run then senior Erica Ogden doubled to clear the bases. Then for good measure, Kachure singled to score Ogden and put Capital up 6-1 after the five run inning.
  • Shearer pitched into the sixth before being relieved, finishing her day with five strikeouts across five innings, allowing four runs, three of them earned.
  • Freshman Katelyn Wilhelm came on in relief and managed to mitigate the damage enough to help Capital keep a slim 6-5 lead. In the final inning, Wilhelm slammed the door on Ohio Northern, allowing just one hit to get the win.

THE SCOREBOOK
  • Ogden led the team with three hits on the day, one in the early game and two later, collecting three RBI and scoring a run.
  • The Capital offense was efficient in game two, scoring six runs on eight hits and drawing three walks.
  • With their two victories on Saturday, the Crusaders took three of four games from the Polar Bears to move to 3-1 on the year.

UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders will play two versus John Carroll at Clowson Field on Saturday, March 20th then travel to University Heights for two more games on Sunday.
