COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital University Baseball suffered a pair of defeats in its home opener on March 14. CU was defeated by scored of 14-5 and 24-0 in a doubleheader against nationally-ranked Marietta College at Clowson Field.

Capital starting pitcher
Jared Heidecker (L, 0-1) pitched two scoreless innings to begin the day and overcame an error in the field that landed the Crusaders in a second-inning jam. Marietta broke it open with a seven-run third inning but only accumulated three hits in the inning. Four walks and a pair of errors helped the Pioneers bat around and take a commanding lead early.
CU posted its first run in the bottom of the third when
Cole Callaghan drove home
Aiden Kinser with a run-scoring single. Marietta then responded with one run in the fourth, three in the fifth, and two more in the sixth.
Capital posted two runs in the fifth and seventh innings via RBI base knocks from Kinser, Garrot Kennedy, and a two-run single by
CJ Rockwell.
Marietta pitched Dalton Wiggins (W, 1-0) went 6.0 innings in the win, surrendering nine hits and three runs to the Crusaders.
Heidecker took the loss for Cap, allowing seven runs – two earned – on four hits, five walks and one hit batsman.
Gavin Vanhorn pitched three innings of one-run baseball to close out the game for Cap.

Marietta came out swinging with a 10-run first inning, which set the tone for the rest of the contest. The Pioneers sent 15 batters to the plate in the first, plating 10 runs on six hits and three Cap errors. Marietta scored seven runs the following inning off of CU starter
Bryant Caporale (L, 0-2). Reliever
Kyle Bowles finished out the inning and then went on to pitch two more, surrendering just two more runs in that time.
While Marietta scored thrice more between innings four and five,
Ben Hatfield came in to strike out four batters in 1.2 innings of work leading to the end of the seven-inning game.
Capital's offense managed just four hits over the course of the second game, all by different players.
Capital (0-4) will regroup and prepare for a four-game weekend series against John Carroll University on March 20-21. The Crusaders will meet the Blue Streaks in University Heights on Saturday and return the favor at Clowson Field for two at home on Sunday.
