COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team traveled to Marietta to take on the Pioneers on opening day and fell in both games of the double header to start their season. The No. 15 ranked Pioneers proved to be a tough task for the Crusaders in all aspects of the game, holding Capital to just three runs and scoring 29 themselves.
GAME 1
- Junior Cole Callaghan opened the Capital campaign with a single but was stranded shortly after as the next three batters recorded outs.
- Senior Scott Gutstein drew the opening game start and was quickly roughed up after Marietta pushed two across in the first inning.
- The Crusaders scored their lone run of the afternoon in the third inning. Callaghan reached on a fielder's choice then managed to score from first after a fielding error caused by a sharply hit ball to left field from sophomore Garrott Kennedy.
- Marietta went quietly in the third but then exploded for six runs in the fourth as the Capital defense committed three errors to help them on their way.
- The Pioneers would then score five more in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead to 16-1.
- Freshman Connor Jones pitched the final 2 and two thirds of the game and successfully held off the Marietta offense with some stellar pitching, only allowing one hit and fanning four while throwing 44 pitches.
GAME 2
- Game two saw Capital gain their first lead of the day as sophomore CJ Rockwell cleared the left field fence to take the 1-0 lead in the second inning.
- However, the Pioneers managed to get to sophomore Tucker Craft later in the inning to tie things up.
- In the third, the runs started to pile up for the home team as they plated four on four hits and an error to take the 5-1 advantage.
- They added on in the fifth, sixth and eighth to amass 13 runs to the Crusaders two.
- The defense held up better in the late game, only committing one error for the contest but the stout pitching and potent offense of Marietta proved to be too much in the 13-2 loss.

- Rockwell led the team with a three hit day, driving in two runs.
- Sophomore catcher Jake Lewis collected a hit in each game.
