WILMINGTON, Ohio – Capital University Men's Lacrosse came out of the gate with a record-setting win against Wilmington College on Saturday afternoon. Earning a victory on Opening Day was a goal, but setting the record for most goals and points scored in a game was an extra plus.

EARLY AND OFTEN
  • The first goal of the 2021 campaign went to none other than senior C.J. Hughes as he tagged an unassisted goal just 1:44 into the contest.
  • Freshman Mason Spaulding scored his first collegiate goal less than a minute later with the assist coming from Hughes.
  • Following Will Freiburger's first career goal, Hughes went back-to-back with goals separated by just 26 seconds to complete the hat trick before the mid-way point of the first quarter. Jack Scharner assisted on both goals, and then assisted on a third straight tally as part of Brenden Pelton's first career goal.
GOALS, GOALS, GOALS!
  • Capital scored 11 times in the first quarter, averaging a goal one every 1:22 of game time.
  • Capital scored five goals in the second quarter, leading to a 16-0 lead heading into halftime.
  • A total of 11 Crusaders scored the first goals of their careers. In addition to Spaulding, Pelton and Freiburger sophomores Jon Gaglione, who scored twice in succession to close out the first quarter, Johnathan Kilgallon and Jake Belt, freshmen Hunter Wagner, Browder Martin, Spencer Rubel, Carson Kott, and Drew Bolen all notched number one.
  • The Crusaders' 27 goals set a new program record for goals in a game, which previously stood at 24. That mark was achieved twice, once against Franciscan University (4/1/15) and again against Bethany College, four years ago to the day.
THE FINAL NUMBERS
  • Capital also set a new record for points in a game. The Crusaders posted 44 points behind 27 goals and 17 assists against Wilmington on Saturday afternoon. The previous Capital record was 40, tallied against Oberlin College on February 25, 2017.
  • C.J. Hughes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) finished the day with three goals and five assists for an eight-point day.
  • Leading Capital with four goals was freshman Mason Spaulding (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty).
  • Browder Martin and Jon Gaglione also posted three goals, both doing so with exactly that many shot attempts.
  • Lake Harris and freshman Mikey Collins dominated in the faceoff circle, combining to go 29-for-32. Harris won 21-of-22 faceoffs with Collins taking 8-of-10.
  • Capital limited Wilmington to just six shot attempts on the afternoon, three of which landed on frame.
  • Graduate student and transfer Ben Houser (Hilliard, Ohio / St. Charles [Illinois Wesleyan]) earned his first win as a Crusader making one save between the pipes in his debut. He split time with freshman Ryan Pierce, who took the second half.
  • Justen Shaw scored both of Wilmington's goals.
NEXT TIME OUT
Capital (1-0) will play Marietta College (1-0) next Saturday, March 6, at Bernlohr Stadium in its home opener. Both teams will be engaging in its first official conference game against one another, as only nine of each team's 13 games will count toward its OAC record for the regular season championship and tournament seeding.
