UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- On the road at John Carroll University, the Capital University women's soccer team found goals from two unlikely sources in
Cassidy Ryan and
Francesca Longano to secure their fourth straight victory on the season.
After conceding a penalty kick in just the third minute of play -- one that was converted by JCU's Brittany Dufalla -- the Comets buckled down and out-pressed the Blue Streaks to find a result.
In the 25th minute,
Cassidy Ryan, forward from her role at left back found some space and lofted a shot to the high right corner of the net to level the score at one a piece. For Ryan, a transfer senior from Westerville, the goal was the first of her career in Purple and White.
The game did not stay level for long as Capital's offense kept the pressure on the Blue Streaks and eventually took the lead in the 39th minute. After
Kailey Stanisovska had a shot drift wide, Longano -- primarily a defender -- found herself in prime position to deposit her first career goal to the upper right corner as well. Longano, a freshman playing just a few miles down the road from her hometown of Mayfield, Ohio, bagged the important goal that would go on to prove as the game-winner in a tightly contested battle between the two sides.
Capital and John Carroll both had their chances in the second half as Cap took six shots and JCU had five in the final 45 minutes of action.
Despite conceding the penalty kick early on,
Lauren White had another sharp performance in net for Capital. She stopped the only other shot she faced on goal to help the Comets hold on for the victory. Prior to the third minute PK, White had a run of 316 minutes of scoreless play going.
After starting the season slowly, the win for Capital is their fourth in a row and third straight OAC victory. The Comets now sit at 4-6-1 on the year and 3-0 in OAC play. John Carroll slips to 6-6-1 on the season and 1-2 in conference action.
Capital stays on the road for their next match as they travel to Marietta College on Wednesday, October 13th. Kickoff along the Ohio River is scheduled for 7 p.m.
