Volleyball Slips Up Against Student Princes

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- On Wednesday night, the Capital University volleyball team dropped their second straight conference match by a final score of 3-0. This time, the defeat came at the hands of Heidelberg University.

Capital (3-9, 0-3 OAC) were paced by a 10-kill effort from Delanie Nahikian. Sydney LaPointe was close behind with an eight kill showing. Jordyn Hoffman once again facilitated the offense and registered 31 assists.

Defensively, the Comets were led by a remarkable 30-dig night by libero Erin O'Connell. The 30 digs were a new career-high for the senior from the greater Cleveland area. Helping O'Connell in the back row was Miranda Jordan who had the next best 10 digs. Caleigh Hamby, Grace Grundy and Sydney LaPointe all had a solo block, while Hamby and Hoffman combined for two others.

Hoffman was the lone player to have a service ace in the match for either side.

On-again, off-again runs of scoring early in the first set set the tone early for Heidelberg. The team had built an early lead with a few runs of solid play that allowed them to hold on for the eventual set win.

Late-on, Capital used a service run from Jordyn Hoffman that allowed them to chip into the Berg lead. Unfortunately, the run proved to be too-little, too-late as Cap dropped the opening set by a margin of 25-21.

The second set was a near carbon copy of the first, where Heidelberg utilized an early slew of scoring to set the tone. This time though, the Student Princes were able to keep any positive momentum from Capital at bay to win the set in a slightly more convincing fashion, this time by a 25-17 score.

Heading to the third set, the Comets weren't ready to go down without a fight. Across the set, Capital took the Student Princes point-for-point, even garnering advantages at times. Unfortunately for the hosts, Heidelberg finally established the eventual lead right at the end. Tied at 23-23, Heidelberg closed the deal on the final two points behind kills from Sadie Estle.

For Heidelberg (12-5, 2-0 OAC), Maddie Szawranskyj led the team with 15 kills, Sarah Oney paced the team with an outstanding 33 digs, and Kelsey Custenborder led the team with 23 assists.

Capital will travel to John Carroll this Saturday for their next match. First serve in University Heights is slated for 1 p.m.
