Volleyball Downed in University Heights

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Saturday afternoon's road trip did not bode well for the Capital University volleyball team as the Comets succumbed to the Blue Streaks of John Carroll University in straight sets.

John Carroll (10-12, 1-2 OAC) took the sets in order by scores of 25-13, 25-17, 25-20 to defeat the Comets (3-10, 0-3).

For Capital, Larissa Smith stepped up to lead the team with seven kills on an error-free 21 swings. Her hitting percentage was an impressive .333 in her collegiate debut. The Comets could not match Smith's clean hitting record on the day as the team committed 29 attack errors, while only totaling 25 kills. Delanie Nahikian added five kills, while Sydney LaPointe and Lindsay Rich added three each to balance out the offensive scoring. Jordyn Hoffman drove the offense with 16 assists.

Defensively, Miranda Jordan led the back row with 10 digs. The Blue Streaks stayed away from libero Erin O'Connell -- who on Wednesday amassed a career-high 30 digs -- as the senior from Cleveland only mustered eight digs on the afternoon. Nahikian (8) and Hoffman (7) also contributed well in the defensive effort. At the net, Capital accounted for four blocks. Lindsay Rich had a solo block, while Nahikian, Alissa Holler, Smith, and Regina Cetnarowski were all in on block assists.

An area where Capital held their own was the service line. Capital had five aces, led by a pair from Miranda Jordan. Nahikian, Smith, and Jenay Kocsis each had an ace as well.

The Blue Streaks' effort was led by two eight-kill showings by Cassi Calamunci and Kailee Herbst. Maddie Maziarz led the team with 15 assists. Calamunci and Lexi MacDonald had 15 and 14 digs respectively to keep the Capital hitters from success.

The Comets will look to rebound on the road this coming Wednesday, as the team heads down to Marietta for a 7 p.m. first serve. This will be Capital's second trip to Marietta this season as they split a pair of games in the Ban Johnson Arena on the opening weekend of play this season.
