Volleyball Takes Two in Non-Conference Tri-Match

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Capital University volleyball team swept a pair of non-conference matches at a tri-match hosted by Thiel College on Saturday afternoon. In the first match, Cap eased past visitors St. Vincent College before taking the hosts the full distance in a five-set match to come away with the two wins.

The Comets now move to 5-14 overall this season with the two wins. The sweep will give Cap some confidence heading into their final three regular season matches this season.

Across the pair of matches, senior Erin O'Connell tallied up 34 digs, putting her just six away from the career milestone of 1,000 in her four years at Capital. So far this season, O'Connell has 347 digs and sits second in the conference with 5.41 digs per set this season.

MATCH ONE: Capital defeats St. Vincent 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-11)
In the first match against St. Vincent (8-15), Capital dominated all match long. Offensively, the team was paced by Delanie Nahikian's 13 kills on 21 swings. With just three errors, Nahikian hit at a .476 clip. Bradan Mast got in the rotation for all three sets and collected 10 kills of her own. Larissa Smith added six kills and just one error for a .385 hitting percentage. Jordyn Hoffman served up 27 assists driving the offense.

Defensively, Erin O'Connell tallied 17 digs in the back row to keep Capital in the driver's seat. Both Nahikian and Hoffman added eight digs each, while Miranda Jordan chipped in with seven. Up front, the team was led by an impressive blocking day. Smith led the team with four block assists, while Mast was in on two blocks. Nahikian, Hoffman, Caleigh Hamby and Alissa Holler all had one block assist each.

Across the match, Capital attacked cleanly and benefited from a negative attack percentage from St. Vincent. On 93 attacks, the opponents tallied just 15 kills and spurned 22 errors. Capital had their best team attacking percentage of the season with a .286 mark. On 77 attacks, Cap powered down 33 kills and had just 11 errors -- their fewest in a single match all season.

MATCH TWO: Capital defeats Thiel 3-2 (11-25, 27-25, 25-20, 18-25, 15-9)
Playing the hosts Thiel College proved to be a much tougher task and threw off the clean attacking run Capital was on. As a team, the attack dipped in match two as Cap only clipped at a .050 mark, committing 39 errors and landing just 48 kills on 180 attacks.

Offensively, Alissa Holler had a team-high 14 kills -- her second most in a match this season. Despite leading the way in attacks, Holler also had the bulk of the errors for Capital. Helping to balance out the attack were Delanie Nahikian's nine kills, Bradan Mast's eight kills and Larissa Smith's seven kills. Jordyn Hoffman once again drove the offense, dishing up 42 assists -- a new career best for the freshman setter.

Defensively, the back row stayed sharp, picking up 77 digs in the match. The team was led by a trio of double-digit diggers as Nahikian had 20 digs, Erin O'Connell added another 17, and Hoffman had 11 digs. The front row defense helped Capital immensely in the match as the team combined on 22 block assists. Larissa Smith led the team with six, while Caleigh Hamby had five. Nahikian added four and Holler had three of her own. Both Hoffman and Mast rounded out the blocking with two block assists each.

The hosts (10-17) were led offensively by Maria Torres who landed 20 kills. Abby Triskett scooped up 25 digs for Thiel. Danielle Aulet dished out 45 assists. Thiel lost a little bit of ground in the match as Capital out-served them, tallying seven aces to Thiel's five. The Comets were paced in the serving game by Larissa Smith's three aces.

UP NEXT:
Capital will return home to The Capital Center for their final home match of the season on Wednesday, October 27th. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. The match will also serve as senior day for the Comets as the team will honor seniors Delanie Nahikian, Erin O'Connell, Jenay Kocsis and Miranda Jordan ahead of the start of the match.
