Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Action Packed Women’s Soccer Thriller Ends in 3-3 Draw

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- On Saturday afternoon, the marquee match-up of Capital University and Ohio Northern University lived up to the anticipation and delivered quite possibly the match of the season across the Ohio Athletic Conference.

After 110 grueling minutes of play, Capital and Ohio Northern played to a 3-3 draw with both teams combining for the six goals, 34 shots, 36 fouls, nine saves, and nine corner kicks.

Things got going early on in favor of the Comets (7-6-2, 6-0-1 OAC). In just the 11th minute of play, Capital drew a corner kick. On the ensuing delivery, Mia Gambaccini landed a perfectly placed ball on the head of Lexi Snider who caressed her header into the back post side netting to give Cap the 1-0 advantage. The Gambaccini to Snider corner kick goal was the second time this season the pair had linked up for a headed goal on a corner kick.

Capital rode their momentum controlling play until the 42nd minute when the Polar Bears forced a turnover in their attacking third. The ball eventually worked its way to Alaina Casey who slid it across to Alyssa Beckett to sweep home, leveling the score just before halftime.

Beckett's goal gave her and her team a boost of confidence coming out of the halftime break. In the 47th and 48th minutes of play, Beckett headed home two more goals, pushing ONU ahead 3-1. Beckett tallied the hat-trick in just under six minutes of total game time.

Despite the early second half setback, Capital regrouped and pushed to get back in the game. Their climb was made easier in the 52nd when Sophia Leonetti bagged her first goal of the year and second of her career. Once again off a Gambaccini delivery into the box, the ball ricocheted around before falling at the foot of Leonetti who placed her shot in the lower right corner of the net.

The Comets continued to push as in the 76th minute, they leveled the score again at 3-3. After a spell of attacking pressure, the ball ended up at Brooke Shutler's feet about 25 yards from goal. Shutler then played an angled pass to Avery Hart who swiveled and shook off her defender to slam a shot to the far post, tying the game. The goal lifted her to a team-leading sixth of the season.

Both teams pressed to win the game in regulation, but neither team could find a winner in the 90 minutes, thus sending the game to overtime. In the extra 20 minutes of play, the best chance fell to Haley Moore. Moore got her head on Gambaccini's corner kick and troubled Kristy Catrine into a difficult save in the ONU net. Aside from Moore's effort, both teams failed to really threaten a solid scoring chance in the overtime periods, thus ending the game 3-3.

In the match, both goalkeepers registered four saves and conceded three goals. ONU's Catrine and Capital's Lauren White were both near the top of the conference in shutouts this season, but the quality offensive play from both teams put the pair of top-notch goalkeepers to the test.

Of Capital's 21 shots, Hart and Snider combined for 11 of them. Beckett led ONU with five shots.

Capital sits second in the conference with a 6-0-1 mark in OAC play, while crosstown rivals Otterbein lead the way at 6-0. The Cardinals play Muskingum later this evening at 7 p.m.

The Comets will return to action on Wednesday evening with an important match against Wilmington College. Kickoff will take place at 7 p.m. at Bernlohr Stadium, with Capital seven seniors being honored prior to kickoff. Cassidy Ryan, Olivia Rotolo, Kailey Stanisovska, Brooke Shutler, Holly Barlage, Gabbi Viggiano, and student-assistant coach Morgan Eakin will be recognized for their contributions to the program.
