COLUMBUS, Ohio -- On a beautiful OAC-tober Saturday afternoon, the Capital University women's soccer team cruised their way to a comfortable 3-0 win over visiting Baldwin Wallace University.
Capital (2-6-1, 1-0 OAC) converted their chances and consistently forced the Yellow jackets into poor shot attempts all afternoon to earn their first conference win of the season.
During the first half, Capital accomplished a feat it hasn't accomplished in a game so far this season as the team scored twice. Despite some early chances, it wasn't until the 19th minute when Cap would find a breakthrough. Freshman
Grace Estes played a great ball through to
Avery Hart. On the end of the pass, Hart took a touch and beat BW's keeper to calmly pass her shot into an empty net giving the team the 1-0 lead, and giving Hart her third goal of the season.
Lexi Snider would then double the Capital lead in the 34th minute.
Mia Gambaccini served a corner kick into the box where Snider's header connected with the crossbar and bounced down along the goal line. The referees judged that the bouncing ball crossed the line, thus awarding the goal. Snider's finish was the first Comet goal this season not scored by
Avery Hart.
The Capital goal was rarely threatened in the first half, as BW took five shots and failed to test
Lauren White.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half, the Comets continued to build their lead. Hart worked a bit of space on the right side and sent a shot across the face of goal. On the back post, Estes was on hand to tap in on the back post and push the lead to 3-0. The goal was Estes' first of her career and comes on the heels of her two career assists this week.
With the three goal advantage, Capital had plenty of comfort to lift the foot off the gas and cruise through the final 30+ minutes to preserve their second straight shutout victory. In goal, White stopped the only shot she faced on target to hold on for her third clean slate of the year.
After today's performance, the Comets have now built some sustained momentum at the right time as they continue the OAC calendar this season. They will look to continue the winning streak this coming Wednesday as they host Heidelberg University for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
