TIFFIN, Ohio – Capital Men's Basketball fell to 1-2 following an 83-56 loss on the road to Heidelberg University on Friday, January 29. The Student Princes outscored Capital by 20 points in the second half to run away with its second win of the season.
Capital (1-2) ran a deep lineup in Friday's night road affair with the Student Princes looking for answers to improve its shoot marks. Despite testing 13 players over the course of the game the Crusaders managed to shoot just 31.7 percent (16-60) from the field and just 5-of-23 (.217) from 3-point range. Conversely, The Berg shot 45.6 percent from the field, though only marginally better than Capital from long range (8-24, .333).
The Crusaders found themselves down just seven points at the half but Heidelberg's Alex Arellano scored five points to open the second stanza to push the lead to double digits for the first time less than one minute in. Capital was unable to score in the opening 3:49 while the Student Princes saw its lead grow to 15 points, 42-27. Capital began keeping pace with Heidelberg until Arellano hit another 3-pointer to put the hosts up by 20.
Capital whittled the lead back down to 10 with 9:38 to go, giving hope towards a potential comeback. This was due, in part, to the work done by
Cameron Caldwell and
Griffin Doseck down low and at the free-throw line. However, Arellano started another run of 12 unanswered points and surrendered just eight points to Capital in the final 7:53 to stave off the Crusaders.
Arellano ended the evening with a game-high 22 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and three blocks. His teammate, Dylan Woods, trailed closely behind with 21 points and five rebounds.
Sophomore
Griffin Doseck (Anna, Ohio / Anna) led the Crusaders with 17 points and seven rebounds, plus one block. Freshman
Carter Combs (Cincinnati, Ohio / Lakota West) was the other lone Cap player to land in double digits with 11 points off of the bench.
Capital and Heidelberg (2-0) will meet again on Saturday night in Columbus when the Student Princes come to The Capital Center to finish off the home-and-home weekend set. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. Live stats and video will be available on athletics.capital.edu, or watch all the action on OAC TV from your mobile device, Amazon Fire or Roku unit.
