Crusaders Struggle to Tame the Tigers, Fall on the Road

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Capital University men's basketball team fell, 79-55, at Wittenberg on Wednesday night in a non-conference game.

Capital (1-1 overall), completed its second of three road games to open its 2013-2014 campaign, struggled from the field in the first half, shooting 37 percent and finished with a 32.7 percent mark for the game.

Early on in the opening frame, the Crusaders were tied at nine apiece with Wittenberg (2-1 overall), until the Tigers put together a 15-3 run, taking the lead for the remainder of the contest.

Junior wing Michael Green (Dublin, Ohio), who led the Crusaders with 17 points in their season opening win last Saturday, scored 11 of his team-high 16 points in the first half, shooting 4 of 12 from the field, including 3 of 4 from behind the arc.

However, no other Capital player scored over four points in the opening half, while the Tigers used their first half shooting spree of 64.3 percent from the field, propelling them into halftime with a 49-28 lead over the Crusaders.

As the second half of play unfolded, scoring points continued to be the name of the game, as the Tigers tallied 10 of 22 shots made from the field, as opposed to the Crusaders 8 of 28 mark.

Three players for the Crusaders recorded a handful of points in the second half, as Green, junior forward Daniel Ocke (Sidney, Ohio) and senior forward Ben Jackson (Columbus, Ohio) all tied for a team-high five points apiece in the second half.

The closest Capital would come in the final half would be 19 points, as they eventually fell to Wittenberg, splitting its opening two games to begin the season.

In total, the Crusaders shot 32.7 percent from the field, as opposed to the Tigers mark of 56.0 percent.

With Green being the high point man for the Crusaders, Jackson and Ocke followed with eight points apiece, tallying three and two rebounds, respectively.

Eight other Capital players checked in with six or fewer points on the night.

With the loss, the Crusaders are now set to conclude their season-opening road trip, as they take on Ohio Wesleyan on Nov. 26 at 8 p.m. in Delaware, Ohio.
