The Capital University men's basketball team won for the eighth consecutive time Wednesday night, rolling to a 90-62 victory over Muskingum in an Ohio Athletic Conference match-up at New Concord, Ohio.
The Crusaders (10-4 overall, 7-0 OAC), who are currently alone atop the league standings, shot 56.1 percent from the field, including a sizzling 66.7 percent (20-for-30) in the first half. The team knocked down 13-of-26 from 3-point range and eight different players hit from distance.
Senior forward Spencer Niekamp (St. Henry, Ohio) paced a balanced Capital scoring attack with 23 points (on 10-of-14 shooting) and six rebounds. Seven other players scored at least six points in the contest, including sophomore forward Daniel Ocke (Sidney, Ohio), who had nine.
The Crusaders knocked down nine 3-pointers in the opening frame and led the Muskies (1-13, 0-7) 49-21 at halftime. Capital took control of the affair with a 30-6 run starting at the 10:26 mark until the end of the first half. Ocke and senior guard Michael Sommer (Celina, Ohio) combined to score 11 points in a 22-4 run ending at the 3:10 mark before the Crusaders poured in eight straight to end the frame.
Capital continued to expand its advantage in the second half, leading by as many as 35 on two separate occasions. Fifteen different players saw action for the Crusaders, each playing at least six minutes and no more than 22.
Capital's bench outscored Muskingum reserves 51-22. The Crusaders outscored the Muskies 17-4 on second-chance points.
Wednesday's game marked the second straight where Capital scored at least 90 points. After a nail-biting 70-68 triumph over Wilmington on Dec. 18, the Crusaders have won by an average margin of 29.7 points over their last three games.
Capital continues league play this Saturday at Ohio Northern. Tip-off in Ada is scheduled for 3 p.m.
