The Capital University volleyball team was unable to get a rhythm going Saturday, falling 25-6, 25-16, 25-13 at Mount Union in an Ohio Athletic Conference match at Alliance, Ohio.
Freshman Katie Weilbacher (Grove City, Ohio; at right) led the Crusaders (10-17 overall, 2-3 OAC) with four kills, three assists and seven digs. Senior Shannon Quinn (Miamisburg, Ohio), who entered the week ranked first in the nation in digs per set, and sophomore Kelly Leonard (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the defense with 15 and eight digs, respectively.
Freshman middle hitter Olivia Arledge (Frankfort, Ohio) contributed with two blocks.
The Purple Raiders (18-5, 5-0), who are ranked 16th by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) used a pair of 7-0 spurts in the first set to take the early advantage. Capital jumped out to an 8-4 advantage in the second thanks to the strong serve of freshman Natalie Briggs (Pataskala, Ohio) before Mount Union responded to tie it at 10-10. With the set tied at 13-13, the Purple Raiders won 12 of the last 15 points to push the Crusaders to the brink.
After breaking a 4-4 tie, Mount Union held the edge throughout the third and final set.
Capital looks to get back to .500 in the conference and strengthen its hold on a spot in the OAC Tournament this Tuesday against Marietta. Match time is slated for 7 p.m. at the Capital Center.
