COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's soccer team opened up a new season with a tough match-up, hosting Denison University at Bernlohr Stadium on Tuesday night. There, the Comets used two quickfire goals early in the second half to down the Big Red, 2-1. Capital now sits 1-0 on the year, while Denison is 0-1.
Freshman
Brinley Barnett was in the action for both Comet goals as the newcomer was a catalyst on a Denison own goal before she cleaned up a rebound of a shot off the crossbar for her first career goal and eventual game-winner just over a minute later.
Capital found themselves trailing in the fourth minute of play as Denison snuck a goal by Mara McGlone and that deficit carried into halftime.
Lucky for Capital, the halftime break was just what they needed as the score was tied just 36 seconds after kickoff as Barnett found the ball at the top of the penalty area. On a bounce, a Big Red defender sailed the ball into her own net, tying the game at 1-1.
Just 1:23 of game time later, Barnett was at it again as she knocked home the rebound of a shot from transfer
Payton Childers that rattled the crossbar. The rebounded goal sparked the Comets in front, 2-1.
After going in front, Capital had some decent chances, but ultimately found themselves on the back foot as the Big Red pressed for an equalizer. Good for Capital, the Purple and White's defense stepped up and limited the Denison opportunities and made them take difficult efforts in their desperate attempts at a comeback.

Lauren Hinshaw made two saves in the game as she played the full 90 minutes between the posts.

Capital's tough start to the season will continue as the Comets will head up to Cleveland this Sunday, September 6th as they play on the road at No. 11 ranked Case Western Reserve. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m.
