Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Swept by Marietta in Home Finale

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University softball team played at home for the last time this season on Saturday where they were defeated by Marietta via 5-1 and 15-10 scores.

The results bring the Comets' overall record to 16-17 and 5-9 in the OAC. Marieta improved to 20-16 and 6-8 in the conference.

GAME ONE: Marietta def. Capital, 5-1
The first three plus innings proved to be a classic pitchers battle as both Alyssa Miller and Marietta's starter allowed just one hit combined through three full innings.

It wasn't until the top of the fourth when Marietta plated a run on a sharp comebacker off Miller's foot that scored a run from third. From that point on, the Pioneers added one more run in the fifth and two more in the top of the sixth to go up 4-0.

Capital got a run back in the bottom of the sixth on a classic first and third play as Megan Parry scored from third base.

The Pioneers finished the game with a fifth run in the top of the seventh to seal off a 5-1 win.

Capital tallied six hits in the game with Shelby Allen tallying two hits. She was joined by Parry, Emma Sweetman, Ryanne Wilson and Audrey Thomas with one hit each.

Miller (8-6) was the losing pitcher as she allowed three earned runs on four hits and five walks. She struck out 10 hitters – her second career double-digit strikeout performance. Addi Parker pitched the final two innings and conceded one run on five hits with two strikeouts.

GAME TWO: Marietta def. Capital, 15-10
The Comets fell into a 7-0 hole in the second inning and were forced to climb out of it. After the Pioneers led 8-0 in the top of the third, Autumn Bridges collected an RBI to kickstart the offense for Capital.

Eventually, the Pioneers went up 11-1, but the Comets began a comeback effort. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Ryanne Wilson started things with an RBI double, followed by a two-RBI single from Reagan Irons. Kyleigh Kirby then collected an RBI on a fielder's choice to make it 11-5.

One inning later in the fifth, Capital continued the momentum trimming it to 11-8. Wilson again hit an RBI double and was followed by another two-RBI single by Irons.

In the sixth inning, Capital again scored, bringing the score to 11-10. Those runs came via an RBI single from Morgan Priest and Ryanne Wilson

Marietta halted the comeback with four runs in the top of the seventh to win 15-10.

In total, Capital tallied 18 hits in the game – three each from Autumn Bridges, Megan Parry and Ryanne Wilson. Reagan Irons, Lyndi Hemmelgarn and Morgan Priest each collected two hits, while Shelby Allen, Isabel Sayre and Audrey Thomas each had one hit.

Megan Mlinaric (5-7) took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits and a walk. Alyssa Miller, Susan Gray and Emmalee Putnam pitched the rest of the game in relief. Mlinaric, Miller and Gray each had a strikeout.
