COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University softball team battled several schedule rearrangements due to weather this weekend, but thanks to a late addition, the Comets were able to celebrate Senior Day with a single game vs. Rio Grande. In that game, the Comets and Red Storm battled through 10 innings of play before the visitors finally found an edge, winning 8-6.
With the results, Capital drops to 16-13 overall, while Rio improves to 30-16.
The visitors garnered a lead in the third as two runs scored on an errant throw. Facing a 2-0 deficit, the Comets fought back, eventually having a strong fifth inning.
In that fifth, Capital got things going as
Kyleigh Kirby picked up an RBI, scoring
Lyndi Hemmelgarn. Then,
Autumn Bridges hit an RBI single that also scored a second run on the throw. And the inning was capped off with an RBI double by
Morgan Priest to make it 4-2, Capital.
That lead would hold for the Comets until the top of the seventh when Rio hit a two-run home run to tie it and force extra innings.
In the eighth, Rio scored a run, but Capital answered back in the bottom half with an RBI single by Hemmelgarn.
In the ninth, again, Rio scored first, but the Comets again answered, this time as
Ryanne Wilson hit a sacrifice fly.
Unfortunately for Capital, the tenth proved to be enough for the Red Storm as they scored twice and the Comets could not answer, finishing the game, 8-6.
Eight Comets finished with one hit a piece as
Kyleigh Kirby,
Autumn Bridges,
Morgan Priest,
Ryanne Wilson,
Shelby Allen,
Emma Sweetman,
Lyndi Hemmelgarn, and
Audrey Thomas each had one hit a piece.
Megan Mlinaric (5-5) twirled the whole 10 innings in the pitcher's circle and conceded eight runs (five earned) on 12 hits and three walks. She struck out six opposing hitters and now sits on 199 career strikeouts.
