SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Capital University softball team earned a split at Wittenberg on Wednesday as the team run-ruled the Tigers, 16-4 in game one before falling, 8-3 in the nightcap.
Capital is now 14-12 overall, while Wittenberg is 18-12.
GAME ONE: Capital def. Wittenberg, 16-4 (5 innings)
The Comets used three big innings to do all the damage en route to a 16-4 run-rule victory over the Tigers.
First in the top of the second inning, Capital plated six runs thanks to an RBI double by
Reagan Irons and
Morgan Priest, a sac fly by
Audrey Thomas, an RBI fielder's choice by
Isabel Sayre, and a two-RBI single by
Shelby Allen.
Later in the top of the third, Capital scored another five runs with runs coming via an RBI groundout by Priest, and three straight RBI singles by Sayre, Allen and
Megan Parry.
After Witt got a run back in the bottom of the third, Capital answered back with five more in the top of the fourth inning. This time, runs came courtesy of an RBI by
Ryanne Wilson,
Autumn Bridges, Sayre, and a two-RBI double by
Emmalee Putnam.
Wittenberg would go on to score three more runs, but those would prove to be consolation as Capital emerged with the 16-4 victory after five innings.
The Comets lsugged 15 hits in the opener with Sayre, Allen, Parry, Irons, Priest and Thomas each leading with two base hits.
Kyleigh Kirby, Bridges, and Putnam each had one hit.
Alyssa Miller (7-4) earned the win, pitching 3.2 innings and striking out five.
Addi Parker pitched 1.1 innings of relief without allowing a run.
GAME TWO: Wittenberg def. Capital, 8-3
Capital fell behind first with a run in the bottom of the first inning, but they answered back with three runs in the top of the third to go up 3-1. Those runs came courtesy of an RBI walk by
Autumn Bridges, an RBI single by
Isabel Sayre and an RBI by
Reagan Irons.
Unfortunately from there, Capital couldn't keep the offense going as Witt scored seven runs to salvage a split.
Capital had six hits in game two, with
Kyleigh Kirby leading with two. Sayre,
Ryanne Wilson,
Morgan Priest and
Audrey Thomas each had one hit as well.
Addi Parker (3-4) started the game and tossed 2.1 innings, striking out one.
Megan Mlinaric tossed the final 3.2 innings and struck out two.
