NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Capital University men's lacrosse team traveled to Muskingum for a midweek OAC match-up where they fell by a final score of 15-12.
With the result Capital falls to 6-7 overall and 4-2 in the OAC, while Muskingum improves to 7-7 overall and 4-2 in the conference.
Capital fell behind early on a Muskie goal in the first minute of play, but the team responded well with four straight goals through to the start of the second quarter. Those four goals came from
Jess Lipp,
Anthony Carusone (2) and
Devin Flynn.
Despite Capital leading 4-1, the Muskies ended the half on a 6-0 run to carry a 7-4 lead into the break.
Out of the halftime break, Capital scored two quick goals to chip the lead to 7-6. Both of those goals came via
Aiden Evans. Despite the Comets getting back into it, Muskingum again responded by scoring two more through the middle point of the third quarter to make it 9-6.
With Capital needing to find a way back in, the Comets rattled off three goals in just under three minutes thanks to Carusone,
Colton Woods and
Mason Miller to tie the game at 9-9 with 3:17 left in the third quarter. Despite the flurry by Capital, Muskingum scored once more before the end of the third, bringing the score to 10-9, Muskingum.
The start of the fourth quarter did not go to plan for Capital as Muskingum scored the first three goals to go up 13-9. It wasn't until the 4:44 mark of the quarter that Capital would get a goal back through Woods to make it 13-10.
Before all was said and done, both teams added two more goals with Capital's coming via
Charlie Howenstine and Lipp.
THE NUMBERS
Anthony Carusone led the team with three goals.
Jess Lipp,
Aiden Evans and
Colton Woods each tallied two goals, while
Devin Flynn,
Mason Miller and
Charlie Howenstine each had one goal.
Howenstine dished out two assists, while Woods and
Braeden Flint each had one helper.
Tyler Lieu led the way with nine ground balls, joined by five each from
Aiden Evans and
Freddy Noday.
Ian Zaletel,
Leelan Durham and
Mason Miller each had four pick-ups.
Gino Nave led the team with two caused turnovers, while
Jackson Hart, Zaletel, Durham,
Dylan Christopherson and Miller each caused one turnover.
Wyatt Stemler made 10 saves in the cage for Capital.
Tyler Lieu was 11-for-15 in faceoffs, while
Freddy Noday was 10-for-16.
