COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Capital University men's lacrosse team delivered an impressive offensive performance on senior day Saturday afternoon, defeating University of Mount Union, 13-7, at Bernlohr Stadium.
Capital moves to 7-6 overall and 5-1 in Ohio Athletic Conference play, while Mount Union falls to 6-7 on the season and 2-4 in conference action.
The Comets wasted no time setting the tone, jumping out to a 4-1 lead after the opening quarter. Goals from Colton Woods and Jess Lipp fueled the early run, as Capital controlled possession and dominated the ground ball battle from the start.
Capital's offense continued to roll in the second quarter, erupting for six goals to take a commanding 10-2 halftime advantage. Lipp led the charge with multiple scores in the period, while Braylon Dawson and Woods added to the tally. The Comets capitalized on key opportunities, including a man-up goal late in the half, and consistently found success attacking the Mount Union defense.
After the break, Capital added another goal in the third quarter to extend its lead to 11-2. The defense remained steady, limiting Mount Union's chances and forcing difficult shots.
Mount Union attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring five goals in the final frame, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome. Capital added two more goals in the quarter, including Lipp's sixth of the game, to secure the 13-7 victory.
Jess Lipp led all scorers with six goals, continuing his standout season for the Comets. Colton Woods added four goals, while Braylon Dawson contributed a hat trick with three scores.
Charlie Howenstine paced the team with two assists, and Mason Miller chipped in another helper. In goal, Wyatt Stemler earned the win with nine saves over nearly 57 minutes of action.
Capital controlled key statistical categories, out-shooting Mount Union 48-39 and dominating ground balls 36-16. The Comets also held a decisive edge on the face-off, with Freddy Noday and Tyler Lieu 17 of 24 attempts.
