VERO BEACH, Fla. - The Capital University baseball team squared off against Monmouth College on Saturday, Mar. 7 for their final two games of their trip down to Vero Beach. The Comets would earn the double-header sweep, taking 11-4 and 2-1 victories over the Fighting Scots. With today's results, Capital heads back home with a record of 10-3. Meanwhile, Monmouth falls to 0-7 to begin their season.
GAME ONE (11-4)
In their first game down south, Monmouth would get hot early, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning to take the early lead. They would also add one more in the second, using two hits and a Capital error to extend their lead to 4-0.
Looking to battle back, Capital would respond with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the second.
Charlie Colson,
Kielan LaMarr, and
Bryce Kyees would all draw a walk with the bases loaded to shrink the Monmouth lead to just one.
The score would remain the same until the bottom of the fourth, when
Gio Mastrorosa brought in the tying run by way of a hit by pitch. Just one batter later,
Ty Clifton would rip a ball right back up the middle for a two RBI single.
Robby Harrison would cap off the inning with a RBI single of his own to bring the score to 7-4 in favor of the Comets.
The game would be put out of reach just one inning later, as the Purple and White would add four more runs to make it an 11-4 ballgame. The big blow in the inning would come from the bat of
Michael Andryszczyk, who launched a two run homer over the wall in left center for his third of the season.
Capital would get a phenomenal appearance on the mound from
Tyler Bebout, who would come into the game after just one inning of play, throwing six innings in relief for his first win of the season. The junior would allow no runs on just three hits, also recording six strikeouts.
Leading the offense were Harrison and Andryszczyk, both finishing with three hits and two RBIs.
Grayson Gulley and Clifton would each have two hits in the contest.
GAME TWO (2-1)
After plenty of runs scored in game one, the second game of the day proved to be quite the opposite. It would once more be Monmouth getting on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
The Comets would answer back in the top of the third, as Mastrorosa and Harrison would each have RBI singles to take a 2-1 advantage.
Trevor Woodyard was dominant in his second start of the week, having a gutty five inning performance where he would allow just one run on two hits. The Pickerington native would finish his line with five strikeouts.
Earning his first career save was
Dawson Lewis, shutting it down in the final two innings of play. The freshman would strand a runner on third in the sixth, only allowing one Monmouth hit.
