MARIETTA, Ohio – The Capital University women's lacrosse team suffered a slow start in what turned into a 14-8 loss on the road at Marietta on Wednesday night.
The result drops the Comets overall record back to 4-5, while they start 0-1 in the OAC. Marietta jumps to 5-4 on the year and 1-0 in the OAC.
The Comets got out of the gates quick, scoring the game's opening goal just under two minutes in. The goal came via a woman-advantage as
Holly Stoner scored to make it 1-0.
From there, however, the Pioneers settled in and scored the game's next five goals to lead 5-1 by the end of the first period.
Mia Cruz halted the flurry of Pioneer offense with an early second quarter goal, but the hosts again responded in force, scoring four straight to go up 9-2.
Leah Leno ended the quarter with a goal off an assist by
Sydney Norch to make the halftime score, 9-3.
In the third quarter, Capital started things with a goal by Cruz again, but Marietta scored the next two to make it 11-4. Norch and
Grace Wolfe each scored for the Comets before the end of the third period to keep Cap within striking distance at 11-6 heading to the final period.
Coming out of the period break, Capital started on the right foot as Norch again turned provider as
Eleanor Walsh scored her first of the game to make it an 11-7 score with 13:48 left to play. Just three minutes later,
Grace Wolfe scored again to bring it within three.
A woman-up goal by Marietta extended the lead back out to 12-8 which eventually became 14-8 by the final horn.
THE NUMBERS
Grace Wolfe and
Mia Cruz led the team with two goals each, joined in the scoring column by
Leah Leno,
Holly Stoner,
Eleanor Walsh and
Sydney Norch.
Norch was the leader in assists with two, while Walsh recorded one as well.
Wolfe and Leno each led the team with five ground balls each.
Kadyn Hyer recorded four draw controls, two ground balls and one caused turnover.
Brooke Burchfield made 10 saves in goal for the Comets.
