Comets Take Down Spalding in Sunday Showdown

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Capital picked up a strong home victory on Sunday afternoon, defeating Spalding, 11-7, at Bernlohr Stadium to even its record at 4-4 on the season.

The Comets used a dominant second quarter to seize control of the contest, outscoring the Golden Eagles 5-2 in the frame to take a 7-3 lead into halftime. Capital never relinquished that advantage, holding off a late push from Spalding in the fourth quarter.

Leah Leno opened the scoring for Capital with a man-up goal midway through the first quarter before Heather Stoner added two first-half goals to help spark the offense. After a back-and-forth opening period, Capital found its rhythm in the second, getting goals from Leno, Mia Cruz, Grace Wolfe, and others during the decisive run.

Sydney Norch led the way offensively for the Comets with a hat trick and an assist, while Leno added two goals and one assist. Cruz and Heather Stoner each contributed two goals, and Holly Stoner finished with a goal and two assists to pace a balanced Capital attack.

Capital continued to build its lead in the third quarter, as Holly Stoner and Norch found the back of the net to push the advantage to 9-4. Spalding responded with a late goal in the period and added three more in the fourth, but the Comets answered with two key scores from Norch to maintain control.

Defensively, Brooke Burchfield anchored the Comets in goal, recording nine saves in the full 60-minute effort.

Capital held advantages in draw controls (13-6) and shots on goal (18-11), helping dictate possession throughout the afternoon.
