CLERMONT, Fla. – The Capital University softball team embarked back to The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida for the first time since the 2022 season for spring break this week. Down there and playing on dirt for the first time this season, the Comets showed no signs of rust as they won both of their opening day games by defeating Wentworth 8-4 and Allegheny 5-1.
Capital is now 2-0 to start the season, while Wentworth is 1-1 and Allegheny is 0-2.
GAME ONE: Capital def. Wentworth, 8-4
The Comets wasted no time getting their offense going after
Megan Mlinaric opened the game with a 1-2-3 top half. In the bottom of the first,
Megan Parry tagged an RBI single that scored
Kyleigh Kirby before
Reagan Irons scored on an RBI fielder's choice by
Audrey Thomas.
Wentworth tied it at two in the top of the second, but a three-run home run by Kirby in the bottom half of the second put the Comets ahead for good, 5-2. A RBI single by Mlinaric scored Parry to make it 6-2 before the inning was over.
Later in the third inning, Capital sealed the deal with an RBI by
Shelby Allen and an RBI single by Kirby. A late fifth inning solo homer by Wentworth proved only consolation as
Addi Parker slammed the door shut to seal off the 8-4 win.
Capital tagged 13 hits in game one, led by three off the bat of Kirby. Irons had two, with one each from Parry, Mlinaric,
Ryanne Wilson, Thomas,
Emma Sweetman,
Isabel Sayre,
Autumn Bridges and Allen.
On the mound, Mlinaric started the game and tossed two full innings before making way for Parker to finish the job. The duo combined for seven strikeouts as Parker earned the win.
GAME TWO: Capital def. Allegheny, 5-1
The Comets fell behind in the second inning 1-0. That early run for the Gators proved the only one for either team until the top of the fifth inning.
In that fifth frame, the Comets erupted for all five of their runs, with the party getting started by
Megan Parry who launched a deep home run to left field. After Parry's bomb, the Comets scored runs off RBI singles from
Ryanne Wilson,
Isabel Sayre and
Susan Gray. In the midst of the Comets' run, Wilson scored on a wild pitch to cap off the scoring.
The Comet bats were active again, this time tagging 12 hits. Parry and Sayre both led the way with three hits each, while Wilson had two hits. Kirby, Sweetman, Bridges and Gray each had one hit as well.
Alyssa Miller started in the pitcher's circle and went the full seven innings, allowing just two hits, six walks and one run all while striking out eight opposing batters.
