NEW CONCORD, Ohio - Capital University men's basketball put together one of its most complete performances of the season Wednesday night, pulling away in the second half for a 97-79 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) road victory over Muskingum at the Muskingum Recreation Center.
After trailing 41-40 at the break, the Comets erupted for 57 second-half points, shooting 66.7 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes to turn a tight contest into a convincing win. Capital used balanced scoring, efficient shooting, and control of the paint to improve to 8-13 overall and 3-9 in OAC play, while Muskingum fell to 13-7 overall and 5-6 in conference action.
Capital placed four players over 20 points, led by
McKane Finkenbine, who scored a game-high and career-high 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting to go along with four assists. Finkenbine now stands just 20 points shy of 1,000 for his career.
Julian Mitchell followed closely with 23 points, knocking down four three-pointers and a perfect 9-for-9 effort from the free-throw line.
Se'Ron Calloway-White added 22 points and seven rebounds, while
Chris Mitchell chipped in 12 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists for a double-double.
The Comets took control early in the second half, opening with a decisive run that pushed them in front for good. Capital built its largest lead of the night at 24 points, capitalizing on Muskingum turnovers and dominating inside with 48 points in the paint. Capital also outscored the Muskies 14-6 in second-chance points and converted 23 free throws on the night.
Muskingum was paced by three players with 14 points apiece, but the home team struggled to keep pace after halftime, shooting just 35.7 percent from the field in the second half.
Capital finished the game shooting an impressive 59.6 percent overall and 40 percent from three-point range, while holding Muskingum to 46.4 percent shooting for the contest.
