COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University men's basketball team had an opportunity for a thrilling upset win, but senior
McKane Finkenbine's three-pointer at the buzzer caught back rim and fell no good, allowing No. 20 ranked Otterbein to escape The Capital Center with a 66-64 victory.
The result pegs the Comets back to 8-14 and 3-11 in the OAC, while Otterbein moves to 20-3 overall and 12-2 in the conference.
The Comets held a halftime lead over the Cardinals, 38-33. The highlight of the first half for Capital came at the 1:53 point as
McKane Finkenbine knocked down a step-back three-pointer. The bucket was good to give Finkenbine his 1,000th career point and make him the 34th member of the 1,000-point club at Capital University. He's the latest player to join the exclusive club and the first since the 2019 season.
Out of the halftime intermission, both teams came out fighting, but a pair of back-to-back layups by Jarius Jones tied the game at 42-42 with 15 minutes to play.
From that point on, the Cardinals played from in front, but the Comets refused to go away, keeping the score within single digits for the duration. With 27 seconds left, the Purple and White got within two at 66-64 and benefitted on an offensive board. Despite the new found possession,
McKane Finkenbine saw two late shots catch the rim but not convert, leading to a final score of 66-64.
Se'Ron Calloway-White led the Comets with 18 points, followed closely by Finkenbine with 16.
Cade Davies scored 11 off the bench.
Finkenbine,
Julian Mitchell, and Davies led the team with five rebounds each.
Finkenbine was also the leader in assists with four and tied for the team-high in steals with two alongside Calloway-White.
