COLUMBUS, Ohio – Capital University men's basketball battled until the final seconds but came up just short in a 73-69 Ohio Athletic Conference loss to Ohio Northern on Friday afternoon inside the Capital Center Performance Arena.
The Comets (7-13, 2-9 OAC) led 31–29 at halftime and were tied or within one possession several times late, but the Polar Bears (13-7, 8-3 OAC) used timely free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
Se'Ron Calloway-White led Capital with a game-high 23 points, shooting an efficient 8-of-11 from the field while adding five rebounds.
McKane Finkenbine followed with 16 points, four assists, and three steals, while
Dallas Tucker chipped in 10 points and five rebounds.
Capital controlled the glass throughout the afternoon, out-rebounding Ohio Northern 48-32, including 18 offensive rebounds.
Brody Gowen was a force inside, pulling down 13 rebounds, while
Chris Mitchell added seven boards in the effort.
The Comets shot 41.1 percent from the floor and scored 34 points in the paint, consistently attacking the rim. Capital also created extra chances with 24 second-chance points, keeping pressure on the Polar Bears throughout the contest.
After Ohio Northern edged ahead early in the second half, Capital responded with multiple runs, including a stretch midway through the period where the Comets scored on five of six possessions to regain the lead. The game featured five ties and seven lead changes, reflecting the tight nature of the matchup.
Despite a late push that cut the deficit to two points in the final seconds, Ohio Northern sealed the outcome at the foul line to close out the game.
