OBERLIN, Ohio -- The Capital volleyball team hit the road Wednesday night for a match at Philips Gymnasium, taking the opening set but falling to Oberlin, 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 24-26, 22-25). The Comets dropped to 3-11 with the loss.
Chloe Preocanin led Capital's attack with 10 kills and two block assists.
Cici Harris added nine kills while hitting a team-best .368, along with a solo block and three block assists. Setter
Carlee Thompson recorded 23 assists, eight digs and four service aces.
Ava Knight added six kills and a team-high 12 digs, and
Afaf Smidi added 10 digs.
Capital trailed early in the opening set before pulling even at 6-6. The Comets then used an 8-2 run to turn a 7-7 tie into a 15-9 lead and went on to win the set 25-19.
Oberlin answered in the second set with a 4-1 run to take a 12-8 lead and held it the rest of the way. Capital cut the deficit to 21-22 on a kill by
Abby Reed, but the Yeomen scored the final three points to take the set 25-21 and even the match at 1-1.
The third set was the closest of the night. Capital led by as many as four before Oberlin went on a 5-0 run to take a 20-19 lead. The teams were tied six times from 19-19 on, including at 24-24, before Oberlin scored the final two points and closed it out on a service ace for a 26-24 win.
In the fourth set, Capital tied the score at 11-11 and took a 13-12 lead before Oberlin went on a 5-0 run to go up 17-13. The Yeomen stretched the lead to 22-17, and the Comets fought back to within 24-22 but could not complete the comeback. Oberlin took the set 25-22 to win the match.
Capital finished with 38 kills, 11 service aces and 47 digs.

The Comets look to bounce back with an OAC match-up against the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace. Capital returns to the Capital Center Arena on October 3rd for a 1 p.m. start.
