Comets Catch Fire From Beyond the Arc in Dominant Win

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Capital University women's basketball hosted the Wilmington Quakers in an OAC conference matchup. The Comets shot the lights out in the first half going 50% from three-point range, allowing them to go into the half with a 45-28 lead. Wilmington was hot coming out of the half, but Capital was able to fend off the comeback. Despite a slower third quarter the Comets were able to go on a 20-4 run to end the game with a final score of 76-46.

Winning makes Capital 10-4 on the year and 3-2 in the conference. The loss drops Wilmington to 4-9 and 1-3 in conference play.

The Purple and White started the game strong shooting 58.8% from the field in the first quarter. Kya Jordan led the Comets offensive effort with nine points on a perfect 4-4 shooting. Kendall Spreen was getting it done from three-point land, shooting 50% from beyond the arc in the first quarter.

Carrying some momentum from the first, the Comets were able to sustain a 9-0 run going into the second quarter leading to an early timeout from the Quakers. The run would extend to 12-0 before it was finally broken. The shooting clinic continued for Capital who shot 50% from three in the first half on 16 attempts. Kendall Spreen led the Comets in scoring going into the half with 12, supported by strong performances from Kya Jordan and Izzy Rodriguez. Rodriguez scored seven points on a perfect 2-2 from three-point range.

Wilmington came out of the half hot. With Capital in a bit of a shooting slump, it looked like the Quakers might come back. The Comets were able to thwart Wilmington's second effort and go into the fourth quarter with a 52-38 lead. 

The Comets dominated the fourth quarter, starting out on a 6-0 run. Samaree Perkins came alive in the second half, shooting a perfect 4-4 from three and scoring 22 points in the game. Capital's offensive dominance would not be stopped as they went on a 20-4 run to finish the game. To complement the offensive performance, Capital's defense was relentless. The Comets finished the game with 14 steals. The combined effort allowed them to win with a final score of 76-46.

The Numbers
Samaree Perkins led the Comets offensive effort with 22 points. She also brought in four rebounds and led the team with two blocks.

Izzy Rodriguez was co-leader in rebounding with six. She also assisted the offensive effort scoring seven points on an efficient 2-3 from three.

Kya Jordan had a well rounded performance with 15 points, six rebounds, and six steals. She went 7-11 from the field and led the team in steals and was co-leader in rebounds.

Kendall Spreen played well offensively scoring 15 points. She was also co-leader in assists with three.

Kyah Ewing was co-leader in rebounds with six and assists with three, both career-highs for the freshman. Ewing also scored 13 points in an all-around game.

Freshman Jayonna Overby scored her first career points in the Comet victory.

Capital University women's basketball will travel north to Westerville to take on their rivals, the Otterbein Cardinals in the two teams first meeting this season. The game is set to tip off at 5:00 pm on Saturday, Jan. 10th.
