Comets Play Lockdown Defense in Close Victory

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Capital University women's basketball hosted the Student Princes of Heidelberg in a conference matchup. Both teams had trouble settling in offensively. Capital's defense was aggressive early, forcing turnovers and only allowing six first quarter points. Kyah Ewing was a force on both ends of the floor in the first half, recording 13 points and three steals. The Comets went into the half with a 27-22 lead. Heidelberg was able to find their stride, eventually tying the game in the third quarter. Up one going into the fourth the Comets were in the driver's seat. Despite a late effort by Heidelberg, Capital was able to maintain the lead with a final score of 58-51
 
Winning improves Capital to 11-6 on the season and 4-4 against conference opponents. The loss makes Heidelberg 1-13 on the season and 0-6 in the OAC.
 
Neither team was able to create much offensively, especially early on. After some back and forth a 5-0 run by Capital forces a Heidelberg timeout. The Purple and White put up a strong defensive showing in the first quarter, only allowing six points. Kyah Ewing came up big for Capital offensively in the second quarter, prompting another 5-0 run that led to a timeout from the Student Princes. Heidelberg was able to work their way back into the game and keep it close going into the half with a score of 27-22 in favor of Capital.
 
The Student Princes were able to tie the game early in the third quarter. The Comets didn't let up and were able to keep scoring points of their own. Capital was led in the third quarter by the backcourt combo of Kyah Ewing and Kya Jordan. The score going into the fourth quarter was 37-36. Capital would finally get some breathing room after a clutch three from Julia Nash extended the lead to four. Heidelberg kept it close, but were unable to complete their comeback attempt leading to a 58-51 Capital victory.
 
The Numbers
Kyah Ewing led the Comets in points with 15. She also brought in three rebounds and logged three steals.
 
Kya Jordan led the defensive effort for Capital, snatching five steals. Jordan also led the team in assists with three and was second in scoring with 13.
 
Samaree Perkins was a beast on the boards. Perkins led the Comets in rebounding with 17 while scoring 11 points.
 
Nyla Washington set career-highs in both points and rebounds tonight, scoring 11 and snatching seven boards.
 
Julia Nash contributed six points to the Comets offensive effort, going 2-3 from beyond the arc.
 
UP NEXT
Capital University women's basketball will travel to southern Ohio to take on the Marietta Pioneers. The game is scheduled for Saturday, January 24th and will tipoff at 3:00 pm.
