COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University volleyball team hosted the annual Pam Briggs Classic on Friday and Saturday this weekend, where they finished with a 1-3 record over their four matches. Overall on the season, Capital is now 1-7 through their first eight matches.
The Comets opened the weekend with a 3-0 win over Allegheny, before falling 3-0 to Hanover, Stevenson, and Centre in the following matches.
Capital def. Allegheny, 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-9)
The Comets had one of their more efficient offensive outings of the season, landing 31 kills on their attempts to help spearhead their way to victory in what was their first win of the season.
When all was said and done,
Chloe Preocanin led the way with 13 kills, followed by
Ryann Bunyak who had seven.
Carlee Thompson finished with 16 assists, while
Shy Black had seven helpers.
Defensively,
Abby Brunner had 20 digs, followed by Preocanin's 12.
Samaree Perkins and
Abby Reed each had two blocks at the net.
Serving, Preocanin polished a well played game with four aces, followed by Brunner and
Morgan Metzger with two each.
Hanover def. Capital, 3-0 (26-24, 25-12, 25-9)
Capital was undone by a lopsided hitting percentage in the match as Hanover hit at .305 and Capital managed a .074 clip.
The stat leaders offensively were Bunyak with eight kills, Preocanin with seven and
Olivia Milton with six. Thompson set up 21 assists.
In the backrow, Brunner scooped up 18 digs and in the process eclipsed the 1,500 career dig milestone. Preocanin added seven digs.
At the net, Perkins accounted for the only two blocks for Cap.
Serving the ball, Brunner, Perkins, Preocanin and Black each had an ace.
Stevenson def. Capital, 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-20)
The Comets played well throughout but ultimately could not find a way to close out the sets, eventually slipping by narrow margins in each of the three sets.
Bunyak was again the leader with seven kills, followed by Perkins and Reed who had four each. Thompson set up 16 assists.
Brunner scooped up 15 digs, followed by Thompson with five.
Perkins accounted for four blocks, while Milton added two.
Serving the ball, Perkins again led the way with four aces.
Centre def. Capital, 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-17)
The story of the match was hitting percentage as the Comets netted out, while the Colonels – who had received votes in the preseason AVCA polls – hit an astounding .318.
Abby Reed landed five kills, joined by
Ryann Bunyak and
Samaree Perkins with three each.
Carlee Thompson set up 14 assists.
Abby Brunner accounted for 16 digs, joined by
Morgan Metzger and Thompson with five each.
Defensively at the net,
Samaree Perkins and
Olivia Milton each had two blocks.
Serving the ball, Thompson had three aces.
