COLUMBUS, Ohio – Despite a strong and well played match, the Capital University men's soccer team fell by a narrow margin of 2-1 in their season opener against No. 13 nationally ranked Kenyon College. The Comets succumbed to a 79th minute winner from the visiting Owls.
Capital fell behind in the 11th minute as Kenyon got a goal off a nice placed shot across goal by Hayato Ishii that settled into the side netting. From there though, Capital kept the Owls in check and limited their chances while also seeing quite a bit of the soccer ball in the first half.
The patience and momentum from the Comets paid off in the 49th minute as they drew level off
Brendon Dorsett's first goal of the season. Dorsett cleaned up the ball at the top of the six-yard box after
Jackson Terry's corner kick was settled by
Tony Epstein for Dorsett to slam home.
Despite the level score, Kenyon began to grow back into the game and eventually found a wide open shot in the 79th minute from Justin Buchwalter that gave them the eventual 2-1 win.
In the Capital goal,
Ethan Ogden made four saves to keep the Comets in it throughout.
The game proved to be fairly competitive and physical throughout with 23 fouls being called and five yellow cards being issued.
THOUGHTS FROM COACH KIRK
"Tonight was a great example of the environment and atmosphere we're trying to build within our program. Kenyon played a great game and I could not be more proud of how our guys held themselves together in the fight. We can be disappointed to not get the result while we learn to play for 90 minutes, but we get to quickly regroup and build from this positive start again on Sunday."
